    Which wired router for plusnet?

Our current router which was supplied by plusnet is starting to crash quite a bit, overheat, drop connections, its quite old and frankly its time for a new one.
(will find out name of it later, too much stuff in the way at the moment)

I'm looking for a integrated modem router for use with our broadband (ADSL?) 16MB unlimited connection from PlusNet.

    features looking for -
Gigabit ports - would be nice, our 6 PCs are currently on a 4 port gigabit switch and 2 in the router 100mb ports.
wireless - couldn't care less, don't use it, don't have any wireless devices. need to be able to turn it off.
easy to setup - needs an easy to understand interface.
many connections - me and my sister do quite a bit of online gaming, also quite a lot of HD movie/youtube/iplayer and similar watching. all at the same time.

budget - less than £100 or thereabouts

    found so far.
    TP-Link-TD-W8970 £46.98
was also looking at the ASUS routers, but they seem to have no modems and/or to expensive because of the wireless support.

one feature that's throwing me that's mentioned on the ASUS's is Powerful Online Multitasking up to 300,000 Data Sessions. is that just marketing speak for a feature that's on every router anyway?

any other suggestions? although that TP-link TD-W8970 seems to do everything we need of it.

Re: Which wired router for plusnet?

oo err.... I hope that tplink works properly. dad has somewhat jumped the gun on ordering it before I got some second opinions or alternatives.

i did find this about it http://community.plus.net/forum/?top...690.msg1039882, mentions all the different settings to check. sounds simple enough to configure after a firmware update.

will let everyone know how it goes in due course (for future thread referencing/people searching with similar question purposes)

Double your budget but built to last and has 6 ports, you may like to look at a Draytek Vigor 2860

Re: Which wired router for plusnet?

why does it have to be integrated?
you get a BT modem with plusnet, i personally have plusnet myself and opted for a asus RT-n66u router and it is flawless, full of functionality and works perfectly.

Re: Which wired router for plusnet?

integrated because it uses less power and less sockets and easier to wire up. mum and dad logic, they're the ones paying the bills
also its just 1 thing to buy instead of 2, the modem part of current one keeps dropping the connection (plusnet have checked the line) then well need a bigger switch part aswell, integrated is just a lot easier for us.
current router is a Thomson 585 (I think) about 5 years old or more.

do those more expensive and way out of budget routers actually do anything better or more stable with regards to wired connections?

wireless is not ever going to be used on it in any way shape or form, so I'm ignoring the 5ghz dual/tri antennas and associated stuff as its just going to get turned off. To me, the more expensive routers just seem to have better and better wireless features and stuff to do with wireless and the wired parts of them just stay the same.
so whats the point in spending more for features we will never use?

Re: Which wired router for plusnet?

just to finish off this thread (for people internet searching and stuff )

    the
TP-Link-TD-W8970 arrived this morning. ordered on Saturday, despatch confirmation was monday morning, delivered Tuesday by Royal Mail at Christmas non the less

came in a neat box, detachable wireless aerials with an on/off button. so no need to say they stayed in the box and the switch went to off. plugged it up with phoneline and one computer to set it up, lights came on, it found the broadband signal in about a minute, bunged in installation disc went through step by step.
voila internet now works and router hasn't crashed when more than 2 of us are connected.

connections more stable aswell. stayed at a constant 1.65MB/s when doing a 250MB file. other router was jittery and varied the speed down to 800kb/s (it was the same file from same source)

so far very happy with it

just one cosmetic problem though. the mounting holes on the back are wider apart so need to move the screws

Just wondered when you say the Wi-Fi wont be used ever, has no one in your family got a mobile phone, tablet, games console, lappy, camera ect?

My main PC is linked by LAN but I have the wifes lappy, Apple TV, PS3, two phones and a 3DS all using the magic of Wi-Fi

Re: Which wired router for plusnet?

bog standard phone only phones, all the rooms that need internet are already wired up, games console is a C64, cameras have USB wires aswell

I've just got a tablet for Christmas but that works via wired aswell (see my other thread in android forum), the wifi part of it is only going to get used when im out because I have other methods for when im at home.

its too much of a security risk for wifi for the kind of information that's on our PCs, nothing illegal, just politically sensitive in nature.

Re: Which wired router for plusnet?

One thing I would say is that if the modem/router has wireless on it (pretty common these days) turn it off, ether a button or within the modem options, it'll save power and heat, even if no connection has been setup.
Quite a few of the older modems had overheating issues with wireless turned on.

If you had contacted Plusnet, they would have sent you a new router for £6.

Personally, I would have gone for the ASUS router

    OR
    a Linksys router

.. if I had the money

Yeah the Linksys/Cisco models look great, but I took two back because of overheating issues and bought an Asus.
