Schools Admins in here please :)

    RM !?!?!?!?

whats all that about then ? I know they have a bit of a subsystem that sits over windows but I would like to know a little more about it as I may be doing some IT support for a schools network and want to know what I'm letting myself in for !!

From what I remember about RM's subsystem, its basically a modified version of LanManager (from IBM I believe). Think of what RM has done more on a customisation level more than re-programming.

Thats what I remember, but then again I have been known to be wrong more than once before

I am a school admin, running RM Connect 2.4.

They only get a pain, when you do not do things using the RM Tools... If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask...

School admin here too but we dumped RM connect about 18 months ago - thank £$%%. It was £$%%^& horrible.

I gather they've moved to XP now as the standard desktop so perhaps its less of a hideous inflexible .ini file based bodge than it was.

yeah, connect 3 uses XP... We're still running connect 2.4, but I'm still quite new to it all so I am still learning Haven't had any probs yet, so not really had a chance to get too involved in it yet.

so far all I've been told is that of the 6 machines there , 2 of them are RM - after a browse through their website , it would appear that these are probbaly RM windowboxes. As they dont have an RM server I'm hopeing everything else will be straightforward , but I'll keep you folks posted.

I worked in a school as a technician for a yr and from what i learnt RM is definately one to stay away from - they dont seem relaiabale and there expensive. The general network maintenace was done by the network staff and wasnt really too much of a hassle.

But, the school admin network is something else. Its best left to be maintained by someone else - in this case RM (we had it managed by the local council IT support). The reasons behind this were that you need a consistant level of support (or basically your not to blamle if it goes down), and we found that in our school the PC belong to the admin staff and didnt want anything to do with you/ listen to you/ consult with what they buy and install on the machines untill they were broken!

But to be completely honest, i never saw anything special about RM systems - as theysay, if you want something done properly, do it yourself!

well we'd be supporting the network on the council's behalf ( nothing too tricky , just wi-fi into an ISDN router. ( OFC I'll be locking the network down and ensuring that there is some form of content restiction on the external conneciton... )

still we will have to be carefull how much we support them (ie somthing like 2 days a month or we;ll be running round like blue bottomed flies for a fairly low contract value.....)
