    Which provider to go with?

So I'm finally moving after 7 months with grandparents after having moved from Spain, and I'm looking into which provider to go with.

We're currently with Sky and we get awful throttling in the evenings (YouTube barely loads in 360p but speedtest.net reports speeds of 14Mb/s) and with my mobile internet (3) YouTube loads 1440p on my mac no problems.

I'm currently looking at BT and Zen as they don't throttle or manage traffic at peak times, or so they say.

Plusnet say they do, and with a monthly usage of 120GB and above (with Steam, Netflix, YouTube and other services) I need someone who can offer super quick speeds and not slow me down.

In Spain I was used to 18Mb down with NO throttling, so 14 down with throttling is a nightmare. I'm looking for speeds of 50 Mb plus.

Please note Mb is Megabits and MB is MegaBytes.

    Thanks

Re: Which provider to go with?

Well it says that it isn't, however I know it is because the current tenants are using Virgin. However, in my area Virgin suffers from frequent drop outs of internet (not tested with high end broadband, only their basic).

I think they seem to offer the best deal though,as I don't need a phone line and therefor don't need to rent it (more money).

Re: Which provider to go with?

Have a look at BT infinity 76mbit, ideally you should go with Virginmedia, they have some decent offers on. If you take a phone line out it can work out quite a bit cheaper. E.g. I'm paying £35 P/M for 152mbit BB, Talk unlimited with caller display. 152mbit on its own is £37.50 (£32.50 for 3 months)

BT Infinity is much better for me than Virgin. Glorious upload speed too

That's the issue I'm facing. I don't know whether I'll need the upload speeds. The BT exchange is in my town as well, so speeds are excellent in the area. I'm not sure about virgin, but the last house my grandparents were at (same town) they had terrible issues with Virgin - constant slow downs in speed and no internet between 7 and 12 at night (the only time I really use the internet). 76 Mb is quick enough for me really, especially as I lived in spain before hand, which had speeds of 10 Mb/s and a ping of 100 ms. Upload was non existent. Even my mobile internet speed is quicker here.

Just worried about slow downs - the current tenant of the house is with virgin and said they're not very reliable at the house

Re: Which provider to go with?

I was with Virgin at uni and it was terrible, we did manage to get a few free months to make up for the crappy service though. BT at home and it's much better.

Of course... at uni every house had 4+ students dwelling within (which more or less means at least 8 internet hogging devices per house) whilst my street at home is largely populated by the elderly with maybe 2 people a house on average and, I think it's safe to say, far fewer bandwidth munchers. It's probably not a fair test. xD

Re: Which provider to go with?

On certain Sky packages there used to be no throttling/FUP/any kind of restriction. It was perhaps the most agreeable of all the big firms in terms of giving you free license to do what you wanted with the connection.

It's worth checking the different packages and seeing what the T&Cs are.

I found Virgin to be very difficult in terms of speed reliability. We would drop to dial-up speeds sometimes, owing to overutilisation, and Virgin never properly resolved it in a year.

I have, and BT and another company beginning with Z (name escapes me) seem to be the best, but they're both the most expensive

Re: Which provider to go with?

BT, Virgin and Sky...the 3 names I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. Abysmal customer support, speeds are a complete postcode lottery and they constantly try and lock you in for a further 12months+

If the price of Zen doesn't put you off, then go with them. I am with m247 who I have had ups and downs with but when I do pick up the phone they don't make my blood boil.........

Zen isn't now an option as I'm only in the new place for a maximum of 6 months, and their line isn't transferable.

I'm not sure if it's still the case but zen's used to offer month by month broadband. No contracts. Might be worth seeing if it's still an option.

They do indeed, but not at the speeds I'd like, and it's quite pricey.
