    Laptop PCMCIA problem

I have a laptop with a Xircom PCMCIA card with 2 slots.
One for a 56k modem connection the other for an Ethernet lan connection both via a dongle adapter.
The modem connection works fine. The Ethernet connection though always says
“network cable unplugged” even when I have an Ethernet cable plugged into it and then into the router I have tried a couple of dongle adapters but no change
I have tried the cable with another laptop that has an ethernet connection built in and it works fine.
    Any ideas please

Have you had a look at the IP settings - is it set to a manual IP address, for example, or is the TCP/IP protocol uninstalled for that card...? Go to start>settings>network connections and have a look at the properties for that adapter....compare them to the ones of the computer that it works on. Sounds like you have IP set manually on one whereas its defaulting to DHCP on the other...

Tried using the card in the other laptop? Seeing if putting it in another machine works?

Some newer machines come with "autosense" connectors, IE don't care if they are connected crossover or not...do you have a crossover AND straight through to test with? Could be the newer machine is flipping to crossover mode when the card can't do that..?

being a network, it could easily be a number of things...

1). sometimes if you try and network without a switch or hub you won't get a connection (daverobev is right).

    2). faulty cables.

    3). faulty ethernet card

    4). corrupted drivers

try reinstalling the drivers for your ethernet card, try a brand new or an ethernet cable you know that, try the ethernet card in another laptop, if all fails get a brand new ethernet card, or perhaps consider wireless??
