How to Connect 2 computers with 1 RG6 cable?

My xplorenet cable is connected to my desktop PC(the blue cable with square connectors). My wife on occasion uses the cable for her laptop, so we pull it out of my PC and plug it in her's.

Is there a device with a splitter and a double throw selection switch so we can choose either computer, but not both at the same time for the input? Plugging and unplugging will eventually wear out the connections. We never use both computers at once.

    Thanks for the help

Is the cable that you connect to the PC an RJ45?

If it is then to connect both up all you really need is a basic switch or router. I know you say you don't need them both connected at the same time, but would it do any harm?

Im surprised Xplorenet didn't supply you with a wireless router to be honest?

Yes, I would say so, 8 terminals at the top.

Oops, forgot to reply. If I need to plug it into a box of any kind that's OK. I was concerned more of signal strength and signal mix up if both PC's are using it at once. They used to have this sort of a setup for serial printers. You can choose a printer and simply slide the switch.

Those are no longer really issues with modern networking fortunately! Could you tell me the make and model of the device(s) that acts as the intermediary between the cable coming into the house and the cable (as pictured above) that goes to your pc?

I only ask because i would like to make sure I want to make sure i give you an accurate recommendation instead of assuming i understand how your set up currently is!

Provided the modem supports dhcp for more than one device, which I suspect it may not. Op is more likely to need a router of some description.

Indeed, hence me asking for more information from the OP. It could be that he already has a combined router/modem and only needs a cable. It could be he's connecting directly to the modem and actually a router with a bit of intelligence is needed.
Its the difference between a bit of change and £20-30

Re: How to Connect 2 computers with 1 RG6 cable?

I have a .JPG pic of the connection box, but I can't post attachments yet. I have the "image" option but only for URL format.

But it's a AC powered black box 0f 2.5in X 2.5in that has my satellite cable in black from the "in" side. The "out" has the two outlets, one the blue 8terminal connector like to my PC, and the other an empty telephone jack. On the box it says RJ45 and the rest warnings about connecting wrong, etc.

    Thanks for the help.

Re: How to Connect 2 computers with 1 RG6 cable?

In which case the best thing for you to buy is a router thats designed for fibre/cable internet connections. These routers will take in the RJ45 cable on a dedicated 'internet' port (the name of this port may differ from router to router) and share the connection on its other 4 RJ45 ports. Another benefit of these devices, is that they will also share the connection any devices that support wireless network connection (wifi). I suspect your wifes laptop will have wifi so you wont necessarily need to connect up the cable for her, of course if you would like to do it with a cable then the Wifi can be disabled and you just plug the cable in!

Here is a list of the routers available at scan:

Here is a list of the routers that seem to be approved by Xplornet
