Overpriced AC1900 router of doom

Morning ladies.

I'm sick and tired of the terrible WiFi performance of the BT HomeHub 4, which drops my connections all the time, all day. As a result, I'm not enthused at the idea of replacing it with a HH5 - and would prefer an upgrade to a good third party router.

My searching has come up with a shortlist of candidates (though I'll listen to alternative suggestions in the same class):

• Asus RT-AC68U - ~£170
• Netgear R7000 - ~£170
• Linksys EA6900 - ~£150
• TRENDnet TEW-818DRU - ~£115

I don't have a firm favourite from the list - the Asus or TRENDnet are most practical from a space perspective, and I'm not keen on the antennaless design of the TRENDnet but it's loads cheaper than the competition.

Basically I never want to need to spend money on another router again - by the time this thing is obsolete, data is beamed directly into my brain by the world's robot overlords.

You can get the the Asus RT-AC68U for £140 if you buy from Amazon.de as Asus operate a 1:1 Euro exchange rate (bar stewards!). I did this with my older RT-AC66U and got that £112 from Amazon.es so it pays to check & delivery is still free!

My issue with the AC68U and the reason I wont be upgrading to it is that it's not wall/ceiling mountable which is a huge fail in my opinion, however like the 66u 3rd party firmware is available and that's a good plus point.

Just throwing this in - the HH5 is supposed to be quite good. Not £150 good but definitely not worst in class.

They don't have any 802.11ac products, let alone AC1900. And reviews of their recent kit have been pretty brutal.

I'm pleased with my AC66Us performance, quite happily near gigabit speeds from the otherside of the house (admittedly to a very good card with external antennae). I briefly had a TP-Link archer which went back under DSR as it was frankly pap. Better than my Superhub 2, but thats not really saying a lot.

I wouldn't worry too much about AC1900/1700 unless you desparately need the performance at 2.4GHz (which is where the difference is). Based on my experience (this same router in 3 different houses) 5Ghz will put in a better performance at anything short of mansion sizes anyway, particularly if its sensibly placed.
