    VPN Proxy server software

I need to create a VM to route traffic to various VPN connections. The VM needs to be as lightweight as possible (so a server-based linux distro is at the forefront of my mind) and ideally be driven via a webgui for setting up VPN connections and routing. Connections through the various VPNs will be handled via proxy settings in the various applications.

Now, normally I would be looking at a Sonicwall......but I need this to be a software solution. Any virtual appliances or Linux distros/apps that anyone has come across that are designed for this?

    TIA!

You know that Dell do a Sonicwall appliance, right? not sure it'll meet your requirements, but as I work for a Dell partner if you want to drop me some more details about the kinds of VPNs you're routing I'll be happy to get my hands on the info for you.

(not trying to make a sale, just offering to help with info if you have a preference for Sonicwall is all)

EDIT - ok, looking into specs the SRA is a pure SSL VPN appliance so won't cut it. Have you looked at the Citrix Netscaler? I've only really used is to front applications and webservers, but I think I've scratched approximately 5% of it's surface in terms of capabilities.

EDIT2 - again, it really depends on your requirements but both Fortinet and Checkpoint offer a virtual appliances of their gateway solutions which might meet your needs. There's also Vyatta, though I have only toyed with it a few years ago (long before it got picked up by Brocade)

I should have said software and free!

I am pretty much giving up on the idea, I do not think there is anything out there that does it, with the exception of pfSense (although that will only work with OpenVPN connections.....which these are not )...looks like a standard lniux distro with vpns and routing setup from commandline.....which is going to be a management nightmare and not something I really want to leave with someone who isn't technically proficient in such things

Try Astaro (although it's been bought by Sophos) It's does VPN, but it's a lot more too so may be more than you need. I've run it for years at home with mail servers and web servers behind it, I only played with VPN a little bit although other people I know have used it a lot. It runs on VMware without any problems.

Not sure what the licensing would be, but the home version is free as is the "business essentials" version, but I've never used that version.

I've not got enough posts to give you links, but if you search for "Sophos UTM Home Edition" or "Sophos UTM Essential Firewall" you'll get them.

makes the difference, for sure (though if it's something for commercial use I think I'd want some sort of solid SLA backed kit)

Ooh, just looking into Vyatta a little it seems that the previously free Vyatta Core software has been forked - more at http://vyos.net/wiki/Main_Page (I've not looked properly into this, but I'll have a proper look tomorrow). This may give you what you need as a freebie so long as you're happy with no commercial support at that price
