    Strange Virgin - Smartphone Problem

I recently moved house and had Virgin install their 50mb broadband. They fitted the newer SuperHub 2 router which emits at both 2.4 and 5Ghz. All devices connected work fine and get around 28 to 48mb over wifi depending on location in the house via speedtest.net.

The one exception is my Nexus 5 phone. The connection is a consistent 3mb using the speedtest.net app. I have a work iPhone 5S sat right next to it and it benches 48mb using the same app! Strangely, if I disconnect and then reconnect the wifi on my phone by flicking it on and off in settings, it then comes back at full speed, before going back down to 3mb after a leaving my phone for a few minutes.

Any suggestions welcome as its seriously frustrating to see it buffer all the time on youtube etc?! I wondered whether it might be some power saving issue on my phones wifi?

I sometimes get the same thing on my Nexus 4 - I put it down to a poor signal from the wifi (it's upstairs) but now it seems it could be the phone...

I had the Nexus 4 too and never suffered problems with either that or the 5 until now. The pairing with this Virgin router just doesn't seem to work consistently. The fact that I can disconnect and reconnect and increase the speed from 3 to 45mb without moving from my seat seems to show its an issue with a setting somewhere....

Re: Strange Virgin - Smartphone Problem

Once again looks like a wireless channel issue, change them to a dedicated channel rather than the default auto setting, test speeds on each channel until you find one that the majority of your commonly used devices are happy with.

shub details ( i really need to copy and paste this)

    open browser
    address is 192.168.0.1
    default password is changeme
    select wireless on left
look down left side for 2.4GHz, right side for 5GHz
I have most success with channel 6 on the 2.4GHz, but its trial and error, the shub does not play by the normal rules
5GHz, test each channel until you match your BBI package speed, should be possible as max is 152 on VM and shub capable of 225 on upstream or downstream (450 half duplex)
avoid auto on 2.4 at all costs

If this doesnt fix it and only happens with one device, the VM staff are very unlikely to be able to help. Test your device on other networks, VM and others if possible to see if problem persists. If it is a device/firmware issue future updates may resolve it, fingers crossed

    hope this helps

Re: Strange Virgin - Smartphone Problem

Just a quick update on this - I recently upgraded to Android 4.4.3 when prompted and it seems to be working fine now. Not sure what changed but I'm happy.
