plugs bits are RJ45, you need a crimping tool to connect this to the cable. Wire out are on the net. Cable usually comes in 305m boxes.

Even in large amounts, it often works out cheaper to buy them.

If it's an oddball length that''s not available off the shelf, I'm sure some of the Hexus chaps who already have the kit would be more than willing to knock up the cable.

Check out the prices of premade cat 5 from just about anywhere - it's for nothing.

    305m cable
    Crimping tool kit
    RJ45 connectors
    Ooodles of time and frustration

    All adds up.....

It depends on what it's being used for. If he's wiring his house with network ports in all the rooms then you won't want to buy pre made cables (and you'd want to use wall sockets as well), but if your running a cable bewteen two PC's in the same room then it's easier to buy a premade crossover cable.

Well the reason i need them is to cable up my student house for networkage and broadband access to computers in each of our 5 roooms.I pop into the likes of pc world and premade network cables are a joke price like £10 for 7m when i can 305m cat 5 cables off net £20-30. I just dunno how much or what heads i need and how much the crimping tool is. Cheap 30-40 premade cables would also be appreciated if any1 knows where to get'em cheap. (Yes we've discussed wi-fi) It'sall being hooked up 2 a 5 port router.

I`ve cabled quite a few places up over the years and believe me when I say it`s a lot cheaper nowadays and less frustrating to go wifi.
If you`re determined, then to do it properly, get a reel of cable (305m), a box of RJ45`s and a set of wall sockets plus a crimp tool from about £15 upover. Allow yourself a full day plus a couple boxes of cable clips and a heap of frustration when your first effort at making a cable doesn`t work.
All the wiring colours are on the net, just do a search.
All the stuff is available from Ebuyer or similar (PCWorld have to make loads of profit to subsidise their fancy shops) or RS if you`ve got plenty money.
While you`re on Ebuyer, look at the price of their cheapie wifi kit which is now near as cheap as wired stuff and actually quite good.
One thing, if you do wire, watch out for fire/building regs and don`t forget max cable length and suchlike.
It`s easy to trip over loose network cables but quite difficult to trip over a wireless signal and unless you`re a fanatic gamer or streaming video and music, 10Mbps wifi is ample or 54Mbps for video/music internally as you`re not likely to be able to afford anywhere near that on your internet connection.

100m is the recommened max length iirc. I doubt you'll need longer than that in a house, unless you are uber rich...in which case buy fibre

Go to Ebuyer, buy cheap wireless kit. Less frustration if you ain`t made cables before.
    Max length Cat 5 is 90M + 10M total patch cables= 100M overall.
Any more then put a switch in as a switch will rebroadcast what it receives.
Course, if you were rich, you`d get somebody else to do it and have GIG-E.

If you shop around you can get PCI WLAN cards for < £20 easily now. You don't even NEED a wireless AP as you could just run the cards in ad hoc mode (though that would mean you'd need to use one of the PCs as a router - an all in one modem / router / WLAN AP would be quieter and possibly safer depending on how much you know about setting up a firewall, etc)

Borrow the crimps or the money you will save on buying bulk cable will be lost in paying for a set of crimps which ain't cheap. The headshells are cheap. WiFi would be easier and then anyone wanting to use it will just have to fork out for a wireless card. Make sure you nail down the access though. WEP isn't much cop but it's better than nothing and I'm pretty sure you won't have the gear to go to full LEAP to protect your network. You can nail down the users by limiting access by MAC address too. Do that as well (apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs)
