What could make a router lag?

Im sharing a router (Sky broadband) with 1 other person. He has like 2 devices connected, and I have 2 devices connected (both pc + android).

However, whenever he connects, the network ping goes to 200ish ms, like so (standard is 40ish)

It probably seems wifi signals related (or some interference caused by his device). Cant be torrents right?

Spyware/malware would be my first thing to check.
    Torrents.
Potentially MTU setting too high on PC (try setting to something in the range 1434-1500) - make sure it's not using jumbo frames.

Hmm, he doesnt seem like the techy type. So I doubt he changed the MTU setting for his PC. I tried to change the MTU setting from the router setup, but that didnt work.

It's very possible. Torrents can chew up a load of bandwidth and also hammer the CPU and RAM in the router making it laggy.

Yep it was his bit-torrent client with the uploads. Capped it at 1kb/s and it was fine then. Thanks guys!

Re: What could make a router lag?

I know one thing - torrenting kills the BT routers. I'm having to order a new router ever other month where the download speeds will drop to less than a meg per second where as normally they're over 7.
