Options for internet while waiting for address change from broadband company

Pretty much as it says in the title. We're moving soon, and if last time's debacle is anything to go by, could be short of internet access for several weeks.

In our household, that's just not feasible! I do freelance work online, my son's social life is pretty virtual and...well, I'm not sure *exactly* what my husband does with all of his bandwidth, but he claims to use Hexus a lot...

Obviously, a mobile short- or no- contract solution (Mi-fi or dongles) is likely to apply, but what's the most cost-effective option for medium to heavy users who need to connect several devices and upload as well as download? I also have no patience at all, so connection speeds need to be pretty fast and reliable if I'm paying for them...

    Any advice?

Sound impossible on a mobile connection. You are going to have to peal back your usage and endure for a few weeks.

You'll probably find you don't need it as much as you thought.

Re: Options for internet while waiting for address change from broadband company

I suppose I could tell the boys to suck it up, as theirs are leisure usages, but the work thing is an issue and involves up-and downloading lots of (relatively small individually) packets of data, so speed and usage limits are still a concern. My main freelance work source is based in the US, but I'm also working for a client who's using Dropbox to transfer files...

An ISP that does 2p/MB mobile 3G data for internet backup systems: http://www.aa.net.uk/telecoms-mobile-data.html

Perhaps you could call them, see how much the hardware would cost to use that on a domestic setup. Speed would be dependant on how good your Three signal would be at the new house as they seem to use them to transport the data.

If you have a BT Hotspot near you, it's not bad for a short term solution. No contract and wifi speeds.
Going to depend on if you can see any hotspots locally of course, but they're everywhere.

    Other companies do similar things.

*ahem* A lot? I'm not sure I'd go that far....

Thanks for the suggestions guys, some good looking ones there, but I've just stumbled across Three's new SIM only plans.

They've started doing a 200 minute, unlimited data contract @ £15/month, and the new plans allow up to 4GB/month of data for tethering (plus additional tethering charged @ £5/GB if you go over that). And no extra charge for 4G. Since I've got a 4G handset and I was considering changing mobile provider anyway, it looks like that'll give me the best of all worlds, since I'll get unlimited 4G on my smartphone and can use that 4GB of tethering allowance to tide us over at the new property.

If you happen to be in London, Relish offer up to 50Mb unlimited 4g with a router for £20/month without a contract...
