    Home Network Advice

    Hello guys

Looking for a bit of advice on my home setup. I have a Netgear DGN1000 wireless modem router connected to my main phone line for the best broadband speed and I have all of my wireless devices connected to it. I also have a wired connection going from it to a PowerLine which provides a wired connection upstairs which goes into a 16 port TP-Link gigabyte switch. So the problem I am facing is the wireless devices can't see any devices on the upstairs wired connections.

I am guessing the wireless devices can't see the wired devices as the DGN1000 has no idea of the IPs being used by the switch?

I tried using an old router as the modem downstairs and using the DGN1000 upstairs solely as a router but I couldn't get it to pass through the internet connection.

I don't need 16 ports upstairs, it was just an un-required device at work so I was given it.

Looking for advice on the most cost effective way of making this work?

    Thanks

If its a switch it shouldn't be handing out IPs. What IP addresses are the upstairs machines reporting? They should be getting IP addresses off the router. If the switch is actually a router then replacing it with a switch should fix your problem.

First thing I'd try is a direct connection from the router to the switch. A switch doesn't usually have a DHCP server built in, that is normally a router function.

If devices connected to the switch can get an IP address from the router when there is a direct connection, then you need to look at the powerline device.

Can a single device connected through the powerline devices get a valid IP address?

and don't forget to check the Ethernet cables themselves!

Is there a management facility on the powerline devices to configure them?

I had a similar problem recently, fixed by powering everything down, and then powering up router, powerline at the router end, powerline at remote end, and finally remote switch. Not sure what the problem was, but I suspect it was an IP conflict at some point, so that might be worth trying in the first instance.

check your ip addresses and subnet masks, make sure they are on the same network id, post them here if unsure, we can have a look.

    Re: Home Network Advice

Thanks for the replies guys. After fiddling around with direct connections and cables I now have it working (I don't think I actually changed anything). My Sonos (wireless) can now see my server (wired).

The oddity I have now is that when I look at connected devices on the DGN1000 router it has WORKGROUP against the IPs for the wired devices. The Sonos can see the server on \\server address\data\MP3s but my Android phone goes to \\workgroup\data\MP3s.

Little niggles but things I can work around.

    Thanks guys.

The android device is using the netbios 'workgroup' name to resolve the IP address. The Sonos device is just using the IP address. Nothing to worry about.

The Android device can't resolve the server name, the Sonos seems to be able to do it, I didn't enter the IP into it.
