i got free nas running on a old dual core pc boots from 8gb usb stick and can log in to it via the gui from chrome but a m8 with a sky router cant get the log in page up his end.

i can get it up on my phone and tablet from wifi is the any reason he cant log in to it??

i also have sky here on an i mac and it also will not bring up the log in gui on that either on ff or chrome??

are you talking about access across the internet? Sounds that way - if this is the case then I strongly recommend you think very carefully about this. Opening up your fileserver to all and sundry on the internet is a stonkingly bad idea.

    Re: free nas setup

I certainly agree with splash. I do have CLI access to my server (not Freenas based) using SSH and it is probed/attacked many times a day. I use a public/private key pair for authentication, and some other measures, but I would not open it up for general log in without good reason.

However, if you really do want to open it up, you will need to open up the appropriate inbound ports on your router. The ports you open will depend on the services you provide. For example, http services are on port 80, so if you are running an external web server, you need to open port 80 and forward that to the Freenas box. You need to open up any internal firewall as well.

You do need to pay attention to the security considerations of the web server, and restrict access to the files you don't want made public.

Many ISPs will also block file sharing ports to offer some protection from the security implementations mentioned above.

What protocol are you trying to open up to the net?

Also, if you're accessing it by entering something like 192.168.0.x, that's a non-routable local IP and cannot be accessed across the Internet - as above you would need to configure port forwarding, but don't enter into it lightly.

Upload speed might be an issue for streaming media, and just bear in mind that by actively sharing copyrighted material (if that's what you have in mind), you potentially open yourself up to a lot of trouble. It's a different ball game to downloading.

For something like that, VPN tunnelling would probably a good way of going about it securely, though not all that easy to configure.

There might be some decent way of browser-based access through FreeNAS (I've not played with it recently so not sure), but don't expect secure SMB access across the Internet without a lot of work.

Also have a look at setting up a static IP through sites like dyndns or no-ip

    Re: free nas setup

For Media you can go the PLEX route instead. In fact there is a PLEX plugin for FreeNAS and using the PLEX app on mobile you will be able to access your content. The only issue is 1) there is a small cost and 2) the dual core machine will be fine streaming 480 and maybe 720 content but will prob fail to transcode full 1080p rips.
