FTP over NTL Broadband

HIya, me and my mate have setup FTP using our NTL BB connection (1.5 mbit both) and are getting daft transfer rates of 4-10 kb/s is this the best it can do am i missing something, btw we are both using terrapin ftp server and filezilla client. If anyone knows of better apps or the reasoning please help. I know that the NTL BB has a kacky upload speed but is that the reason ??? Cheers in advance.

ur upload limit should be 30kb/s, any of you using firewalls/NAT? using the internet while ur sending and recieving can affect the speeds depending on howm uch bandwidth your throughputting and in which direction.

I typically get about 18kb/s but my upload limit on NTL is half of what yours should be.

it could simply be that your street is busy - ntl has contention based on a per street basis. You might simply have a street that uses alot of bandwidth.

but to be honest, your with ntl so you can never be sure what speeds you will get, thats if you even have a connection. 99% of the time you wont get your full download speeds, and 99% of the time you wont get your full upload speeds.

never expect anything great from ntl..they cant even bill people correctly, they cant work out how to do digital TV without using shoddy lossy compression, and they sure as hell cant run an ISP




a more constructive answer to make the best of things would be to use smartFTP or bulletFTP as a server, and FlashFXP as a download client

both those tools are highly respected tools that I use fine with no problems

* bits in a Byte

300 kBITS/s (thats what you get with a 1.5 mb account)

divided by 8 = 37.5 kBYTES per second

SO getting 10 is still lousy

When I use Leech FTP to upload to my web space on my NTL account I get lots more than that.

Put an EMAIL into them. Their tech email is not too bad. I quite like NTL. Never had any grief really. The Telly thing IS a pain though...often get lip sync problems eve non normal programs. Real shame.

Hmm opposite to Zak.. Never have problems with our Telly. Internet on the other hand...

I use the Windows "My Network Places" FTP transfer for my webspace (it just seems so simple for uploading a picture quickly...) and it seems fast enough. Even for big stuff

Ntl always trouble, as spud1 said they cant even bill you properley( my mam ended up with a £500 bill) turned out £300 or something had been added by mistake they are also the time when the internet just stops working suddenly exactly when there tech support closes on a friday

Cheers for your help ( if a little off topic as it is a 12 monther can't really change that) all my dealings with NTL so far have been fine, the fact they upgraded my dwnload is'nt just a sweetner i'm reasonably chuffed as have properly caned it .... anywhoo, on the ftp front I have now gotten the speed up a little but not by much...saying that, am now matching other peeps in this thread so as per the m/bit/s description it seems i have reached my limit (perhaps) either way twill suffice for now.
