I'm with Plusnet and it's coming up to renewal, recommendations for switching?

    Hi,

I'm open to switching. Just not sure who to.

Plusnet have been fine, and the speed has been ok and the deal I got was great. But every now and then it feels slower than Post Office and Sky before it.

They claim they don't traffic shape, not sure what it is.

Anyway, can't have Virgin in this property. Any recommendations? Thanks

Its probably down to contention rather than active shaping. 1:15 is normal ratio for consumers I think.

I will also be switching away from plusnet, but mainly because they changed their policy for house moves during the course of one of the contracts I have with them and were trying to charge me the same amount to move it as it would cost for me to cancel the contract.

If money isnt so important but service is, you could look at Zen, AAISP, Aquiss, Xilo or IDNET.

Money is fairly important on this one, I use my internet but not a crazy amount. Just needs to stream iPlayer every now and then.

I've just been looking around, broadband options are much more limited now than this time last year I see. I pretty much just have SSE or Fuel to choose from since I dislike Sky and BT, and Virgin can't get fibre to my building.

EDIT: I guess there is talktalk but they want 2 year contracts I think

You're probably better off staying with Plusnet than switching to TalkTalk.

Well, I think you are right in the end, I don't know what happened int he last year but there is a lot less choice and longer contracts now. Plusnet offered me a deal where I carry on paying just £2.50/mo for broadband and £12.99/mo for landline if paid upfront.

So, I guess that's fine really.

Things change so quickly with the quality of these companies that I can't take much from your testimonial. I remember the name but they could be anybody now

Demon is now part of Vodafone, and primarily aimed at business users, sadly.

Re: I'm with Plusnet and it's coming up to renewal, recommendations for switching?

I'll be another one to say you're probably best sticking with Plusnet from what I've heard about them. There are some smaller ISPs like Zen and AAISP as Biscuit mentioned but unless you're a fairly light user you'll probably end up paying a lot more and you may only be able to get a metered connection (personally I'd rather not have to worry about watching what gets downloaded at what time, and if anything is auto-updating etc).

And if your speed issues are local contention and/or crosstalk based, switching ISP may not make any difference depending on what sort of line you're on.

I've no idea what SSE or Fuel are like.

Re: I'm with Plusnet and it's coming up to renewal, recommendations for switching?

Ive been mis-sold contracts from bt twice, effectively releasing me from a contract. Offcom changed the broadband migration rules a few weeks back making it easier to get out of contracts.

Also consider putting the contract in someone elses name, eg wife, son etc you'll get the benefits from 'a new customer'. They like to say things like you'll be without internet for 14 days whilst the service is switched, its just scaremongering, everyone bar virgin uses openreach same junctions etc.

I looked briefly at 4g broadband a while back(a big antenna sticking from your roof) , it looked interesting not really cost effective.

Re: I'm with Plusnet and it's coming up to renewal, recommendations for switching?

If price is an issue, stick with PlusNet. They are the best of the el cheapos.

Stay as far away from TalkTalk as you possibly can! Same with EE.

Im with Plusnet and its coming up to renewal recommendations for switching

I have a home plug which is successfully working but I would like to be able to use WiFi in other parts of the house. Can I connect a WiFi access point to the Home Plug and gain WiFi about the house?

Even if you stay put at Plusnet, ring them and pretend you are going to leave for another provider and they will give you a discount, just like mobile contracts really.
