    USR2249 Repeater

    Hi

Picked up another USR2249 access point to act as a repeater to go with the one I've already got to allow me wifi access in my room. However I can't for the life of me get it to work in repeater mode, no matter what settings I choose. I can pick up the access point and connect, but it doesn't seem to be forwarding the traffic on to the main AP nor do I get any communication back. Anyone set up a repeater like this? Any ideas on what needs doing?

Indeed it is. There's only two versions available from the USR site. I've tried all sorts of combinations of WEP, channels, you name it. The SSIDs are set to the same for both APs and I can connect to either, but only the main AP actually has access to the rest of the network/internet

I'll try contacting USR support tomorrow and see what they have to say. Failing anything happening with that I may try flashing one of the APs with the D-link firmware as apparently repeater functionality def. works in their revision.

Hi, I have the same problem with the USR2249, has anybody got it to work? I like a challenge but it's all getting a little silly! Mentioned was the DLink firmware, which model and does this solve the problem? Failing all that it might be back into the box and a trip down the motorway for a full refund! Using a USR015450 as the main AP, all the firmware is up to date - according to the USR site. I guess reading between the lines that the repeater will only work in 22 mode. If anyone cracks this, please post full instructions and firmware used - or suggest another AP that will work in repeater mode !!! Thanks

Righty, got it working! The AP won't work in anything faster than 22mbps mode, despite all the promises. Noone I know can get theirs to flash, and even Scan have admitted (through their knowledgebase IIRC) that it won't do 54G.

As for repeater functionality, it's blooming annoying in that you need to set it up as a repeater using a wired ethernet connection to the router. Unplug the ethernet cable and it should work okay as a repeater. DO NOT unplug the device from the mains either during the setting up or afterwards. If you do unplug it, it needs a wired connection AGAIN to set up the repeater. No settings need to be changed, all you have to do is connect either with the USR utility or via the webserver and save the settings again. It's damned annoying as my mum's always unplugging ours and I have to get the laptop out to 'reprime' it.

Hope that works for you StarTurn!

Thanks Zathras...did the advice come from USR? Following your instructions did get it working...to an extent! Probs with DHCP server which is my ADSL Modem router...but did connect once I assigned static IP's. Not happy with the none 54 upgrade...bought the kit from Scan on that basis. Does the data light flash like crazy? I did the flash upgrade..but it makes no odds. Cheers!!

Data light does crash like crazy. Advice not from USR, but from almost 20 straight hours of messing around with it wondering why it worked some times but not others. I've got two of them and neither do 54G, although I'm wondering whether the 54-speed performance is some sort of weird turbo-22mbps mode that only works with other USR kit in the same family and not 802.11g. I may get in touch with USR support about both this and about why the AP won't work as a repeater after being unplugged.

Generally find most of these kit will speed halve as they are doing double duty, ie tx/rx at the same time, so you get 22mbps from 54mbps and the turbo on some is nearly always proprietary. Most of the chips are struggling to even handle the dual mode as they don`t have much store and forward capacity. Always found the cheapies from Ebuyer to be excellent with the Dlink firmware and 11mbps adequate unless you want to game or download video from a high speed dsl/cable connect.
