    No Internet via ethernet

I woke up this morning to find that my computer could not access the internet. Worked fine last night. The router is working OK with all correct lights illuminated. THe computer is connected to router via ethernet cable. Tried new cable - no change. Wireless devices can find network and connect. I am mystified as to what has happened overnight while the computer was off. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this issue. Thanks

Reboot router, try another port if it is a multi-port router. If that doesn't fix it, Check the computer is getting a valid IP address if you are using the DHCP server embedded in most routers, if not, take it from there. Do you have another device that connects via cable? Does that work?

THanks , I'll try a different port on the router when I get home this evening. How do I check the computer is getting a valid IP address?

Depends on your operating system, if it's windows, control panel is your first starting point. It does seem to get harder to find with successive versions of Windows.

    Re: No Internet via ethernet

    open a command prompt :
    - [Windows Key] + R
    - Type in 'cmd' press enter
    - Type in 'ipconfig'

check what ipv4 address is showing for your network connection.
It will usually start with 192.168... on home networks.
As long as you don't see anything starting with 169.254... you should be ok on the DHCP side.

    Re: No Internet via ethernet

Could be the adapter is disabled, have seen this a few times randomly on Win7 machines. Try control panel > network and sharing center > change adpater settings (top left) > confirm your ethernet adapter is showing as enabled.

I've also seen a couple of routers suddenly go bad like this, where the Ethernet ports start acting strangely or just stop working, so I agree with the process of checking if other devices work when connected to the same port if available.

Check the drivers are installed for network card in device manager
    Check it's not disabled
Test it from a live Linux disc like LinuxMint/Ubuntu

    Let us know..

    Re: No Internet via ethernet

Unplug the router from the wall for 30 seconds and then plug it back in and wait a couple minutes. See if that works as it could be that the router just needs to be restarted hope this helps.
