Question Has anyone switched from BT broadband to Sky broadband recently?

I have signed on the dotted line to do the above. I was propelled by a killer cut price deal via MSE.
Has anyone got experience of the same transition? I've been quite happy with the BT Home Hub 4 - but:
Does BT ask for the hub back? and would it work with Sky anyway?
Is the Sky hub that will arrive on a par for Wi-Fi coverage and speeds?
Any other recent switching anecdotes would be welcome.
    Thanks, Mark

I would also be interested in the points raised.

I called BT and they admitted I was out of contract. However the guy said something like 'The engineer will need to come and disconnect a wire' and that I would have to give 30 days notice. I've switched before so I didn't believe that rubbish about someone coming to change any wires, also when you instigate a switch through another company the 30 days notice is reduced to 14 or 15 and the gaining company takes care of that. At the end the BT guy on the phone said leaving would cost me about £60. But according to my previous switch, again, I don't believe that.
I'm interested to know about my original question regarding the specific BT to Sky differences and routers.

Re: Has anyone switched from BT broadband to Sky broadband recently?

when I left BT they didn't want anything back. And I was out of contract. They tried to charge me a fee. I asked where it said that in the terms WHEN I SIGNED UP - not what they might be now - since I was not advised of a leaving charge once my contract had expired. They couldn't demonstrate that I had been told of this fee up front so I said I was not paying it. Long story short, I didn't get charged. This was 6 years ago mind.

I wouldn't go to sky if you paid me. You're dodging one bullet to get hit by another IMO. And if you think leaving BT is hard, try leaving Sky!! Plenty of threads out there grumbling about them too.

Thanks for the info. Yes, they are all 'devils' but the devil by the name of BT was charging me about £36 in total per month. I'd moved house and had to take the contract with me, after my promo rates had expired. Apparently if you move house you have to start a new 12 month contract - so they said. So it's good to be able to switch every 12 months again, because that seems to be the cheapest way, nothing is gained for being loyal. This time, due to a promotion, I should get my whole year or Sky BB and line rental for a total of £10-ish - for the whole year, not per month.

Depends what BT router you have to compare against. But don't expect the latest tech in the Sky Hub, which I think is the SR102 :-

    http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/netwo...sky-hub-review

No 802.11ac, no gig-ethernet, no USB (e.g. connecting a printer). BT Homehub 5 is better in all these regards. That might not matter if you're only concerned with getting ~30Mbps VDSL download speed, but if you have a home network and lots of modern connected devices then things like 802.11ac can be nice.

Re: Has anyone switched from BT broadband to Sky broadband recently?

Its a BT Home Hub 4. I was thinking it may be better than the Sky Hub SR102, that's why I started this thread really. Wondering if anyone else had transitioned recently and kept using the BT Home Hub 4?

Ah, just looked at my BTHH4 backend interface and there seems like no way to put in another ISP's details/login so I will have to switch it I suppose. Will stump up for a branded router if its bad. My desktop PC should be OK on the Homeplug network even with the Sky router.

You almost certainly won't be able to use another router with Sky. The actual ADSL (i.e. not wifi, but the password sent along the phone line) username and password aren't really accessible. You used to be able to download some software to obtain it for their old Netgear routers but I don't believe that's been possible for a few years. I used to work at Sky Network Services in 2008/9, but I'm told a lot has changed since then.

However, you can use the Sky Hub as just a DSL modem and connect a separate device to its network port to use as a wifi router. Due to an oddly placed phone socket, I plug a powerline network adapter in mine, and have a separate wifi router at the other end of the flat.

This has been my experience of it. My wife used to use Sky before we married. They couldn't even watch iplayer. In central London. She could be the only one in the house and it would be just the same. The folks are still on sky. It's chronically poor. But they get it for virtually free so are riding out their contract. They can tolerate rubbish when they're paying peanuts. If that changes however, they will be out of there faster than they can currently load a website.

Wow, looks like a massive thumbs down for Sky broadband. But since its the same line as used by my current BT broadband (ADSL telephone line), shouldn't it be the same thing? Is BT Broadband good then?

No, unfortunately, it will not be the same.

Once you get to the exchange, you will go onto Skys equipment and network, rather then BTs. This is where the problems start. The only thing in common is the maximum theoretical speed as that is determined by your signal quality between the premises and the exchange.

I doubt you'll be very close to that theoretical speed while on Sky though.

No, I hated BT. Happiest day was telling them to shove it and revelling in the fact I was out of contract and there was sweet FA they could do about me going. They tried to stop me, bless them for all of 5 minutes. Too much throttling during peak hours and jittery service far slower than what I was paying for (or that their speedtest claimed I was getting). I swear they had a detector that spotted the speedtest and unthrottled the line temporarily - though I could never prove that. Back in the day iplayer needed 2Mb/s to play smoothly. The test would say 5Mb/s on an 8Mb/s service (the highest then available - for "gaming"). Yet i-player would routinely grind to a buffer-wheel crash-out. Similarly websites would hang, even just browsing the forums here. Gaming? Forget it! Auto-kicked from servers due to high ping. Their tech support was laughable - and even though I would tell the helpful Sanjeev (literally that was his name) in their overseas call centre I had already checked his 10-point list, he would insist we go through each stage on the phone. This is after the extended hold period and automated queue with horrible music.

I got rid and went to 50Mb/s virgin. Best decision I ever made. 2+1/2 happy years on that, until I moved out. Only went down twice due to some muppet digging through the road cable. Had a few bad nights of stuttering, but only a few. (Think it was the students next door streaming stuff).

Been on mobile internet ever since I left that flat. Not as good, but a much better solution for temporary residences.

Re: Has anyone switched from BT broadband to Sky broadband recently?

I'm not so lucky to have Virgin cable around here. BT's speed is about 5.5Mbps down, 1Mbps up. There appears to be a fibre option, but its estimated to offer half the speed of the ADSL here. Fingers crossed Sky is not too insufferable, I was going to go PlusNet, had them before, as also offered much cheaper deal than staying with BT.
