VPN... how easy or hard is it to set up?

As per title really... I'm thinking of having a crack at it... just for giggles...

Plus, with so many people getting some sort of wireless network going, it'd be cool to be able to access files on my main rig from wherever I am.

Yeah, I know I could remote desktop to my machine, but I'm bored and fancy the challenge... from what I've read it looks straightforward enough, but, oh mighty gurus, please elucidate me...

    Cheers chaps! (and chapesses... )

    bah can't find the guide.

go to create a new connection , in the wizard select "advanced connection" and "accept incoming connections , then select the device & users. You'd then have to map a few ports from your router and bobs your uncle

Okey dokey. so then, from wherever I connect to the net I can access the VPN? So say I use a wifi hotspot, I can access my main rig? Would I need to set owt up on the lappy? If so, would I still be able to surf as usual and access the VPN, or would I access the net THROUGH the VPN?

depends on how you set it up - from the vpn connection, if you go to the TCP/Ip properties and click Advanced , there is a tick box with Use default gateway on remote network.

if you tick it then you'll surf through the VPN , if not , you wont.

Yeah, cheers Moby and TiG... I've had a read of that site you posted TiG, says it all on there.

One last question, just to wind you both up and no doubt have Jiff banging his head on the desk in frustration...

If I DON'T set it up to use the default gateway on the remote machine, will I still be able to surf through the connection my lappy is on? And will I be able to VPN to my home rig in one window and surf through the 'normal' connection (whatever that may be) in another window?

(I'm thinking here that using a connection on the remote machine will be bslower than just using whatever connection the lappy is on...)

Ok, so me and mgh0 got a VPN connectiong going last night, but couldn't share any files. We were both in the same workgroups and I had opened all the ports mentioned in that guide on my router.

I could see he was connected but we couldn't actually see each others PCs.

AM I right in thinking that one of us would have to run Win 2003 Server to actually be able to sahre files over a VPN connection?

Or is there a way to do it just using XP?

    Right,

If it's proper VPN as I understand it, once you're connected it's like you've got a physical connection to the remote network. Forget shareing files, you should get an IP from that network and be able to ping other machines on it.

What I did have trouble with is putting the VPN server behind a router. Every cheap arse one I try doesn't want to do it.

Yeah, we were connected, my network assigned him an IP but not even the shared files on my machine were visible.
