I'm gonna go Ballistic Very Soon!!!

    How do these compare?

    Noise Margin
    22_dB Upstream
    14.5_dB Downstream

    Output Power
    12_dBm Upstream
    17.5_dBm Downstream

    Attenuation
    31.5_dB Upstream
    -64_dB Downstream

The only way I can get ADSL to even sync is if I remove the "master" face plate and plug the adsl microfilter into the main BT feed

Basically BT wired our exchange wrong, an engineer even admitted it, but I don't know what to do... I really need the help of someone on the inside.

There is a cabinet less than 400meters away, yet my line is routed through a different cabinet that is about 1500meters away!!!

Basically, if they routed my line through the nearer cabinet, my line figures would be well within spec for a 2mb/s line, yet I have to suffer a 512 "broadband" service. Oh how I wish NTL or Telewest covered this area

Basically Plus.net say "it's not our problem", yet if I try and talk to BT they just say "deal with your ISP"

    So what next?
Anyone work for BT or Plus.net that can kick some botty from within?

The only thing I can think of would be to have a new, second line installed. That way it'd get routed to the nearer cabinet?

I have PlusNet 2mbit DSL line, heres my routers figures:

    Connection Status Connected
    Upstream Rate (Kbps) 288
    Downstream Rate (Kbps) 2272
    US Margin 31
    DS Margin 31
    Modulation MMODE
    LOS Errors 0
    DS Line Attenuation 16
    US Line Attenuation 15
    - Cant you manually do some wiring or is that not an option?
    - Wouldnt BT rewire for a fee?

    Nemz.

Nah, I've looked at this option.

Basically, there aren't any existing cable runs from that cabinet, so they would use the existing cabinet and cable runs

BT won't listen to just me as a consumer, it needs to come from an engineer / manager / ISP / etc ie someone with some weight behind them

    I'd hassle your ISP!!!!

And if they dont listen... then go and consult another ISP and see if they could do anything.... And then move Service providers

All you can do is just keep hassling your isp and BT, eventually after it's been on the system long enough it gets raised to a different level and you get a more senior tech to deal with it..

It's been suggested that I try a wifi router that is a little more tolerable than my existing 3com unit.

The one that peeps seem to recommend is the Draytek 2600 plus or the 2600G (with wifi).

However the cheapest I've seen the 2600G is about 150quid So, anyone seen it cheaper?

OKif you defo live within 2Mb distance which is less than 3.5km from the exchange as the crow carries copper then your attenuation of 64dB suggest theres major noise on that line, consider the following:

Anything near your socket such as xmas lights, thermostat or any electrical device that would give of 'noise' ?

If not then are you living close to a very very very busy road, Ive heard of instances where by copper pairs have been routed under roads and the noise of traffic kills the signal.

If none of those are upon you then your line is FUBAR I suggest for the time being call BT and tell them your line is faulty and your getting noise during calls. Advise that your filters are fine and if its a engineer install then all the better.

I will PM you later to discuss what further things I may be able to do for you.

    Thanks for the reply Flash.

Currently, the only way I can get the ADSL modem to sync, is to remove the faceplate from the master socket (thus disconnecting all extensions) and plugging the splitter into the MAIN socket.

The loss is 64db as above, when I first moved into the house in Sept (when I had ADSL activated) it was 60db loss, so it's dropped by 4db in the last 3months!?!?!?

Basically, if you think of my estate as a _S\ and I live at the bottom left corner of the S. However the line comes in at bottom end of the \ and runs all through the estate, even tho there is a cabinet at the start of the _. (I hope that makes sense). If anyone has access to the BT wiring diags, then it would all become clear

Drop me a PM and hopefully you can help me more.

Also, just to mention, I've now logged "line noise" 3 times with BT, and all they say is "we've checked the line and it's in spec". they just keep telling me that the line only has to provide telephony services and is not guaranteed for data transfer!

God I wish I had NTL again (and I never thought I'd say that)

bizaarely as the above posts suggest I to have just changed from a origo router whereby I was running at 52dB to a Netgear wirelesss router and its dropped me to 45dB

maybe worth trying a mates router first as taking that faceplate off will become a prob if they do send a tech out

    Ill PM you know

Some routers have better chipsets than others and are more tolerant of line noise.
Any extensions or anything high powered or flossie lights around will tend to increase your noise.
Those new type BT sockets are a pain in the ass when you have the reccomended max of four extensions plugged in, I replaced ours with the old type with screw holders for the wire and cured my ISDN problem (a while back now) and cured my nephews by getting him off wired extensions and replacing the splitter with a decent one. Not all those filters are made equal either.

Concider getting a master socket micro filter - will cost you <£20 but its high quality and plugs straight into the master socket and replaces the faceplate (so you have to re-wire you extensions *BUT* then all you have is 1 microfilter at source as it were) that might give you ADSL and phone.

Try a Westall router - they ahve a good ADSL modem in them.

I had this trouble with only 512 ADSL because of dodgy wiring in my area, but after water got in the box it destroyed the lines, so I could only get ADSL through plugging straight in the main feed behind the box. After many many calls to pipex, and after 3 engineer visits they cave din and fitted one of the proper wall mounted filters, and I've had no problems since. (It seems that after testing, the little filters I got with my frog modem weren't actually filtering at all, and my adsl had been running on the normal line

Right.. first of all try logging on with the bt_test@Startup_domain login ( no password ) and going to www.bt.net. This has a few tools the engineer uses on there

For good filters I recommend clarity.it - bit pricey but their gear works where BT's doesn't. Have you tried changing the rj11 to rj11 cable? I had issues galore with the one supplied with the BT modem and when I got another from work it fixed all my weekly drops

Oh and to put it into perspective, I'm using an origo 19 pound router plugged into a 16 port switch and this works better than some of the more "expensive" options out there.

Other than cutting your line and blaming NYE drunken revellers to fix it the quickest, you'll have to keep badgering BT and if possible get names of people within to complain to.
