    Which ISP for fibre?

Looking to sign up fibre broadband ASAP, looking at BT/Sky etc. Do people have general preference on the ISP or just down to the right package?

I'm looking for true unlimited package, no throttling. Landline not so bothered. Will use my own router.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

PS: Do people use ISP service for TV? I do have an android based streaming box, would I still require the TV services or just use some streaming apps on the box would be fine?

I don't think there's such as thing as no throttling from a fibre provider. They all have fair usage rules which enable traffic shaping.

Thats not true, both Sky and BT are unlimited without any fair useage or traffic shaping.

As far as I know Virgin only throttle the upload.

My first question is are you happy with 40Mbps or looking at 80Mbps or faster?

    Re: Which ISP for fibre?

40Mbps would be fine I guess. - I use it for some downloading, games, HD movie streaming (not sure from where yet) and video chatting.

I 'm checking the offerings from Sky, they offer bundles with Sky+HD box + the fibre broadband+landline, I guess this is probably I'd be looking at. Because the Sky Box seems offer comprehensive channels which I won't get from my android box (or is there any apps do that?). The landline is there for occasionally usage.

    Re: Which ISP for fibre?

I think the simple rule is, the cheaper it is the more they throttle.

I am on Eclipse, they only traffic shape torrents and even then I think it is only at certain times of day. They also give a static IP address and allow you to run servers, basically a business class setup. It isn't cheap, I think for line rental and broadband I pay about £60/month.

If you look at something like the unfiltered 1TB allowance setup from Andrews and Arnold http://aaisp.net/broadband-home1-terabyte.html that costs £60 per month and isn't unlimited. That gives you an idea of the true cost of unlimited, unfiltered broadband. In reality you probably won't notice the traffic shaping unless you go for something really cheap, but you largely get what you pay for. For most people's use, the cheap broadband is fine.

    Re: Which ISP for fibre?

Sky make you use their own router/modem, although there is a relatively easy way around it using wireshark. Guides are available. BT do not force you to use their equipment, Vodafone do and there is no way around it so don't go there if you want to use your own router.

I stand corrected! I know BT used to, but seems they've dropped it. Likewise Sky used to on the package I was on, but that was non-fibre.

I'm a happy plus.net customer and whilst their policies state they traffic shape I can't say I've noticed it. Keeping my ridiculous Steam library up to date, lots of Netflix+Youtube and torrenting means I very rarely see usage below 400GB per month. I get a solid 71Mbps down 18Mbps up.

£5 one off set up fee to switch to static IP with them.

    Re: Which ISP for fibre?

If you use any type of P2P, then BT and Sky will throttle, in some cases (live video streaming) to the point of the stream never starting. You can prove it's their throttling by using a VPN.

thanks for the info. I do use PT for downloading.

I checked with Virgin M and Sky they don't have fibre for the street where I'm gonna live. That only leaves me with BT or Plus.net at the moment, but Plus does not offer any TV service at all. So might have to go with BT.

Don't know about Sky but BT when I was with them on Infinity never throttled my torrent downloads.

    Re: Which ISP for fibre?

Upon checking the flat I found there's a Hyperotic router already installed in the utility room. Anyone had any experience with this ISP? They claim to be 'true' fiber as not using any copper wire at the last meters within the building?

Been with TalkTalk fibre 38mb for two years now and only ever had one issue where the spprd dropped by half ,and that sorted in a couple of days .
A solid download but only a just under 2mb upload which i aint bothered about and no throttling issues . £32 a month for with everything unlimited except the boostsand a free but basis sim card to .
A warning though as with all providers some people may get a crappy experience !!
