    Recommend me an ADSL Modem/Router

    First off let me apologise as I know this topic is probably pretty common, but i just have no idea what to look for, i did search to try and find a similar thread but it seems they are either all 6months old and the hardware suggested probably has a better cheaper version by now or they are all asking for wireless recommendations.

    Basically my parents decided last night that they have had enough of moving our speedtouch usb modem that bt yahoo provided, from room to room to use the broadband. So the time has come to get a router, and i can't for the life of me find a router that takes usb as an input for the internet connection. so the next option would be an ADSL modem/router, wired is fine as the rooms are right next door to each other, and will be connected to 2 computers all the time and maybe a laptop as a 3rd connection too from time to time.

    I have no idea what to look for, so are there any you'd recommend?
    What are the differences in features and performance?

    for example would this be fine http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=48449 at £27 or would we see any benefit in paying £53 for something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=52754 ( i picked these purely because of the examples of price differences)

    i'd be glad for the suggestions, thanks

    I had no end of trouble getting a BT modem to talk to a router, so go for an all in one router/modem jobby.

    They may be a bit more expensive but it's worth it with the hassle free connection. BT don't support the use of them though, so if you have any trouble, you'll have to figure it out yourself. BT will give you the info you need to punch into the router to connect though, so its pretty easy to set up and get working.

    Plus, you can always fling the BT modem on and get on here if you need any help!

    Definatly go with the router / modem combo but i wouldnt get the speedtouch stuff, i dont like it. I have an Asus 1port router / modem and a switch which has served me very well for the last 2 years however i dont think you can get them anymore. Other choices are netgear, everyone hates them but everyone buys them

    Netgear are fine - just dont drop them

    it really doesnt matter what you get as long as the modem is faster than your broadband connection and it does what you want (modem, switch, firewall, DHCP).

    I have a Netgear DG834 or something... Plugs into your phone line (through an ADSL filter of course) and has 4 switching port connections so is ample for my home setup.

    Firewall included works a treat, I don't even have a VC installed, but then again I don't open unknown attachments etc.

    I'm probably going for a Draytek Vigor 2600 series, in fact the VG variant which is a 4-port wireless 'G' router, with 'business strength' Firewall/VPN/Printer Server/Voice-Over-IP features, all rolled into one.

    Maybe over the top for you starting at £140, but I've several contacts reporting that they are rock solid, and do pretty much anything you're gonna wanna do at home, and more..

    Netgear DG834G - Wireless G and a shockingly good router, has been rock solid since purchase 6 months ago..

    Cant recommend it enough
    Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
    Enwrought with golden and silver light,
    The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
    Of night and light and the half-light,
    I would spread the cloths under your feet:
    But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
    I have spread my dreams under your feet;
    Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.

    I should have explained better at the beginning but is was a modem/router combo i was looking for all along but thats what you all recommended anyway, so no problem

    Cheers guys for the speedy responses, my parents don't mind paying £53 for the modem/router combo and as a couple of people have suggested the Netgear DG834 it looks like thats the one we'll go for. Thanks, feel free to keep over suggestions coming though, probably not going to buy it for a few days yet. so our minds may change.

    thanks again
