    Downloads

    Hi

    Me and my partner just got a new system and we get connected to the internet next week. Is there any utillities that you think we should have before opening our doors to the web; I could download anything at work before we get connected if needed.

    Thanks in advance guys.

    Well first of all the web is a nasty place with all sorts of nasty viri, worms and stuff flowly freely so the best advice is to get a good firewall and Anti-Virus. Many are available freely upon the internet but some of the most popular on this forum are as follows;

    Firewall ; www.zonelabs.com / Zone Alarm free or use the Windows SP2 firewall

    AV ; www.grisoft.com - AVG anti-virus

    These are the main 2 types of programs you require really - anything else can be aquired once you've got your internet connected.

    hope this helps

    Yes, but for AVG you'll need the activation code which they'll email to you when you register for it. It's free, and so are the updates, but you do need to give them valid email address and details.

    Yep - see Nicho's remarks about registering and the CD-Key from grisoft

    If your running windows XP then another good idea would be to download SP2 before connecting as this too fixes quite a few holes in windows as well.

    The link to the download for this is as follows ;

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

    Firefox is an alternative web browser - faster than Internet Explorer, highly customisable, and more secure. It offers features like tabbed browsing (one browser window with different pages loaded on different tabs that you can switch between). Go to http://www.mozilla.org and download. It's fast, free and safer.

    look at www.getfirefox.com , its a browser like internet explorer (IE), but it is alot more secure than IE so u r at less risk from viruses and spyware, that brings me on to my next point u will need antispyware, these are the best 2 free ones, use them both
    www.spybot.info
    and Adware se
