    Re: broadband providers

Wowser that makes for a difficult read. Sentences are always appreciated around here.

I always go to Sam Knows first to check out what services and expected speeds there are. Enter your details and it will give you the options for providers.

As for wifi, if the bundled router isn't good enough then it's worth either investing in a replacement router, getting some power-line adaptors, or running some network cable through the house. The wifi performance of the bundled router doesn't factor in to my decision making on broadband providers.

    Re: broadband providers

Virgin is fine - but it's the hub3 that is your issue. Crap-outs, dropped signals, latency and packet loss etc. You just can't game on a hub3. Google Virgin Hub3 puma chipset issues. Sadly not much you can do about that unless you can get a hub2 and persaude them to activate that for you. I would always get the hub, stick it in modem mode and run my own router off it.

Alternate ISPs - see if you can get FTTP. Then see what your options are for FTTC. Have you looked at Zen? They get good feedback on here. Not used them personally as we can't get them out here at a fast enough speed (yet)

    Re: broadband providers

I always check https://www.thinkbroadband.com/isps/compare for broadband providers. For routers, I strongly recommend using LEDE (something with ath9k wifi chipset if you care about wifi performance e.g. TP Link Archer C7).

Sky seems to be okay, was with PN their customer service is great but we kept getting disconnects. Depends on your line quality really, i'm still stuck on copper cables!

    Re: broadband providers

I had similar issues with virgins router. Ended up just sticking it in modem mode and use my own router (Synology RT1900ac). Haven't had an issue since and connection is solid, always the full 200 I get on my package.

    Re: broadband providers

I have found all of the companies much of a muchness. Except perhaps Zen, but they are very expensive for unlimited etc. Also, the majority of the routers are similar and similarly poor!

GO with what is cheapest (package) and then get your own router. But just ensure that the company you choose allows you to use your own router. Sky doesn't AFAIK.

    Re: broadband providers

Would so love to have cable - can't believe that a modern flat in a city can have such rubbish broadband - and only one wired cable for Sky (and there is no room to install a stacker destacker)
Unless, you want to save money and go with slower broadband, best bet does seem to get a new router and stick with Virgin.

try running one of those and then tell me if you think it's ok. Ditto any serious gaming. You get the 200mb download speed, but not consistently. Packet loss and stuttering, drop-outs and hangs etc. Not enough to ruin pure downloading, but enough to get you auto-kicked from servers, and for echo, which needs a steady connection to dive into the red-ring of "unable to connect" constantly.

Connection is solid even when gaming (even when freinds over and 3-4 PC's online gaming at a time), never get any dropouts or the like. Are you using your own router? As I said above, using the HUB3 as a router was a huge issue. As soon as I put it in Modem mode and used by own router, connection has been perfect.

I'm talking in modem mode too. 3-4 people in your place - so are you running your own LAN? The problem lies with how it gets overloaded handling online traffic. Won't affect LAN parties in the same way.
