    Cisco 837 ADSL Router – Any Good?

    Hi,

    Apologies if this is in the wrong form.

    Over the past few weeks, I’ve been having problems with routers crashing (freezing) when there is a large amount of p2p and Bittorrent (Azureus) activity. I then have to manually reboot the router; recently I’ve had to do this every few days and its becoming increasingly annoying.

    I’m currently using;

    1) Efficient Networks 5861 (ex BT running firmware v6.1.001)
    2) Draytek Vigor 2600 (annex A running firmware v2.5.6RC1)

    A colleague suggested that I get myself a “real router” and recommended the Cisco 837, which supports DHCP, Firewall, NAT and has a built in ADSL modem etc

    I’m not a Cisco expert however I’ve worked with a PIX 515E at work, nothing fancy just opening ports etc

    Would the Cisco 837 be the best unit to fulfil the above, I’m not looking for advance features, just web browsing but lots of Bittorrent and p2p downloads and stability is priority?

    Is there anything I should be made aware off before going ahead with the purchase? Please treat me like a complete n00b!

    Thanks,

    Imran

    £300 is a bit overkill for that isn't it?

    Yea, eBay has one for £225 – Can you recommend an alternative brand / model?

    If I did buy one, would it be able to handle lots of p2p / bt connections?

    well, other than spending magabucks, the Drayteks were supposed to me one of the best..

    After having a quick google, some of the US Robotics routers are apparently pretty stable, but I'd want to get further confirmation on that rather than going out and spending a lot on new hardware..

    I dunno if you'll get many people having experience of the cisco either, as that's a whole lot of wedge for a home router..

    well... if you absolutly LOATH being disconnected from the net for 2-5 seconds every 2-3 months, then go for the Cisco.. you can't really beat them in terms of reliablity, security and functionality. But I do think its overkill for home use.

    I have a Netgear DG834G ADSL router and it already has 2 1/2 weeks uptime, hasn't been reset since i installed the newer firmware. Only cost me £70 and it has a kickass firewall, no more crappy windows xp sp2 firewall for me.

    Just to give you guys an update;

    I went ahead with the purchase of the Cisco 837 and it’s the best £200 I have ever spent. I have been through numerous routers and none have performed as well. Connection has been rock solid, no reports of any CRC Errors which was a common occurrence before even after replacing the filters etc Browsing just feels faster, psychological affect I suppose. However when I’m downloading torrents, www browsing is still acceptable, I’ve not enabled QoS yet which I’m sure will speed up http traffic.

    Configuring the router was a little difficult as CWRS was disabled so I had to dig through the command line which isn’t too bad once you get to grips with the common commands used. A bit of searching on the net and trial and error, CWRS sprung to life and the process was made far easier. Feeling a little excited, must have been the adrenaline rush (I know I’m sad) I attempted an IOS upgrade, got it right the second time around. Bear in mind I am no Cisco guru however with some help from Google I mastered some of the basic steps.

    Overall, I couldn’t be happier, no lockups firewall works like a dream and now just to buy a SmartNET contract…

    Thanks

    Imran

    lol, good stuff, Cisco equipment certainly does rock if your pockets go deep enough for it
