MAC Donalds This Aint!!!

OK, i have a wifi router/access point (Unknown which) that i have to gain access to, and taking this on by myself hads proved fruitless, so i throw open my arms and ask for help!

This AP/Router/whatever has an unknown IP address, with DHCP turned off. I know it's NOT on it's previous address of 192.168.8.1 (internal) and access through the external is not possible due to OTT firewall in place further down the WAN.

I do have it's MAC address, and was wondering if any of you fine people have a way of obtaining an IP from a MAC addy. Without this the equipment will be lost and at cost, which as i'm sure you all agree really isn't needed pre-valentines day when i could do with a bonus for working miricles!

not tried 10.0.0.1 but yes, i've gone through almost the entire 192.168.x.x range :s (Port Scanner)

I have no idea - this is all remote!!! Worse is i aren't within range as i type this, otherwise i could get the MAC and serch google for manufacturer and possibly make too

If it's remote why are you using internal IP's ????

And the first post says you have the MAC address... sounds fishy to me.

B0FH.... RTFM... and if you don't have it, ask the person you bought it from/owns it.

note.. by default *MOST* 'Home/SOHO' routers use either of these 3 ipaddrs:
10.0.0.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1

and honestly, i can't see how you managed to obtain the MAC address without the IP address and knowledge of ethernet.

If this is somebody elses equipment and you are trying to utilise it without their permission then you shouldn't be doing this (Personally I blame the person who set it up without any security). It is illegal.

Mine uses 10.0.0.2 so the above could be missleading.

Like everyone above says, factory reset it RTFM and then just connect to the ip it says to (making sure you are in the same ip group).

speedtouch kit tends to default to 10.0.0.138

Could you tell us why you need access to it?

if its a decent spec router then it will require MAC address acceptance at that end before you get a connection

The router is one that has been baught by a mate and he didn't get the manual *tard*
That rules out the RTFM people

I obtained the MAC by using a netgear USB2 wireless card & software - alows you to see the MAC of the AP your connected to, but as i said in the first post - DHCPis not active and as such i connect with my ALT ady (Set to default of 192.168.0.212) and the router is NOT on that address range.

Access is required to try and salvage his money, if not his pride (Considering he classes himself as a techy )

then 1. the router is in a different subnet.
or 2. the signal is most likely encrypted

so, you need to reset the router to its manual defaults. since you don't posses it, you can get a copy from the router manufactors website.
and there is no need for hurling insults here, our help is optional, not manditory.

Whilst i appreciate the help i am recieving from members, comments like RTFM are quite derogetory. I appreciate that noobies do ask questions, but i assure you i aren't a noob, and my ego rarely lets me accept defeat and ask. My mate will owe my ego alcohol and you guys thanks when we get the damn thing working!

I will get him to d/c it and LOOK at it, and then get firmware for him.
Willlet you all know, but let's face it, if this thing still doesnt work after a factory-defaults then he's been had

you have a real egocentric attitude, if you ask for help and you ask stupid questions then don't be supprised when you get responces such as above.

as for a firmware update, thats useless unless you can log into the router.
Indeed.. if it fails to work after a reset, then he was indeed screwed over.
