No, you are quite right - I was in the middle of something when I posted and was a bit distracted. (Although I think my terminology is probably more descriptive! )

Mini rack is coming along... Damn shelves didn't arrive yet though

...yes my cabling is overkill and yes the colours are different deliberately (orange is key for the internet delivery throughout the house)

    2. Both single and multimode fibres use infrared which is not visible.

    3. ‘Long haul’ (Single Mode) fibre may have more powerful lasers leds so looking into the transmitter is more likely to be hazardous.

    4. In Close and Wide Division multiplexed situations, there may be several lasers firing down a fibre, and the powers are additive, so they are particularly hazardous.

In short, (and to repeat what you said earlier)never look into an open fibre port unless you are certain it is dark, either by inspection at the far end, or using a testmeter that covers the relevant fibre spectrum.

Looks good, especially the cabling! A neat wiring loom is a joy to behold!

As a side note, I'm quite looking forward to experimenting with EdgeOS. I've heard very good things about it as a switch OS for people with moderate skills looking to learn a bit more.

Anyone else here got experience with ubiquity gear?

Not directly but heard good things. Sadly it's a bit beyond me.

I think you missed my point - with long haul you can't see anything. Therefore the temptation to look for basic troubleshooting isn't there. This loss of eyesight less likely to be a problem if people don;t look there in the first place

    Bit of a bump -

Biscuit - which SFP modules did you get in the end?

The point is that you can't see anything whether it is long or short haul - the only way to confirm that a port is dark is to test it with an appropriate tester or physically check at the other end of the link that the fibre is dark - which may not be practical for long haul.

Re: Went against my better judgement...

    This has peaked my curiosity
I have a couple of GS724T netgear switches [inherited from work]
what sort of modules / fiber do I need to connect them together [i.e. one in my boiler room and one in the garage [a third in the loft is also a possibility ]

though I may just settle for flat cat6 cable in the end ...

You would be fine with multimode fibre over those distances, but it would really be overkill!

The difficulty (for you) is in the termination unless you buy a pre-terminated pre-cut length of fibre.

TBH, there are few domestic situations (unless you live in a mansion!) where fibre is cost effective. Most NICs are limited to 1Gb/s which is fine over cat 6 so unless you are aggregating multiple 1Gb/s sources you are unlikely to max out a 1Gb link.

Where fibre does have uses is in a very electrically noisy environment or you need some EMP resilience or you are sending data (regardless of speed) over long distances where the lower cost/ metre of fibre over copper outweighs the cost of terminating it. That said, SFP modules can be bought at low cost, so costs are falling - but you still need to terminate the fibre to connect to the SFP module unless you use pre-terminated fibre, which can make installation harder and requires you to specify the cable length fairly accurately in advance.

Thanks for that , it does give me some more info that I can ponder on ,
looking on aliexpres I see https://www.aliexpress.com/item/6COM...839686123.html so that bit's not too bad , it's the actual fiber that is more of a problem, ummm I'll have a thunk

Think this is better and European supply chain

Feel free to PM me if you are serious about this - fibre isn’t quite as straightforward as it might seem

Re: Went against my better judgement...

This little mini rack is actually up and running/working. Im having a bit of a nightmare trying to get the router to act as an IGMP proxy for BT sport multicast streams, and then I also need to try and enable IGMP snooping in the network to prevent everything on wireless grinding to a hault when i'm streaming... easier said than done due to the way I have wired/connected it.
