Who makes good quality RJ45 Network sockets please?

Hi all

Need to lay a few CAT5 cables and though I'd put RJ45 Network sockets on walls

What brands are best please?

logging into the thread as looking to do a similar thing in the next few months. I don't think the brand of housing matters so much as the quality of the cable termination, but be good to know if there is a particular brand to go for/avoid.

Well as NetStore Direct seems to be rated by a few Hexites, I bought the ones they sell which seem to be Connectix. Yet to install so can't tell you what they are like unfortunately! Ended up buying a couple of loaded faceplates and will swap around a couple of modules for other things as that worked out the best price, eg: http://www.netstoredirect.com/cat6-m...aceplates.html

We used the LAP stuff from Screwfix before for the new office and these were quite decent compared to the ones we got from Newey & Eyre.

I'd avoid Maplin stuff like the plague, any networking connectors I got from there have been pants.

We've had networking cables from this company that were generally good quality: https://www.comms-express.com/ - I just don't know how good the faceplates and modules are.

I did my house out in Varilight gear (modular datagrid with Cat 6 RJ45 modules) about 5 years ago. 30+ points have been fine, but there's not much that can really go wrong with the sockets (unless you get dust in the spring loaded flap, so leave a couple of inches on your cable in case you want to swap out for a clean one).

Edit: and just reminded by the post above, added a couple of LAP branded modules in the cellar and they have been fine as well.

I would seriously consider going Cat6 rather than Cat5 if you've not bought anything yet. Cabling will probably be in your house for more than 20 years. We've been at 1 GbE for at least 15 years now. Price difference is tiny. Cat6 can support 10 GbE over short (40-55 meter max) lengths.

I bought most of my stuff from the electrical counter. No issues.

I ended up going cat7 as it was £50 for a 100mtr drum, 23 gauge as well, I am happy with the quality (german)

I've only ever had average results with the white box sockets myself. I much prefer using keystones and blank panels. Best keystones I ever used were tool-less 3M ones, not sure you can fit them into the typical white box though!

If you do get punch down ones, spend a few extra quid on a tool rather than the £2 pap.

Yes, Id agree with that - after all, if you have gone to the effort of installing good quality cable, observing the minimum bend radius to get optimum performance, and installed 10Gb NIC and other 10Gb infrastructure items, there is no point in skimping on the connectors. (And even if yu haven't installed a 10Gb infrastructure, if you are installing Cat6/Cat6a/Cat7, presumably you are intending to in future - or you have very long cable runs and need to squeeze optimum performance out of it)
