One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
We have just made the leap from BT to Vodafone, after the usual setup headaches (they have good customer service for what its worth!) I have been very impressed with the speed. I just don't get why I didn't get these speeds form BT.
I never used the BT router, just their modem to my own router. With Vodafone their router is in modem only mode (effectively) but I am getting a consist 6-7mb improvement from speedtest.net. I am only on day 2 of it but am really impressed. BT had me on a 'up to 54mb' package Vodafone is 'up to 38mb'
How come I am seeing such a difference? Was the BT modem that miserable it cost me nearly 25% of my line capability? Has Vodafone given me max speed, but it will reduce as they 'stabilise' the line?
(Note; apologies for mb, mb/s etc... can never remember which way round it goes)
Re: One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
The quality of the BT line between yourself and the exchange is just one of the many variables which will have an effect on your internet connection performance to any given site.
In other words, a result from a speed test site is not particularly meaningful - in that you can't draw conclusions about your 'line capability' from it.
For example, one ISP may place a greater priority through their core network than another on the connection between you and a particular speed test site, even though the capability of your line between your modem and the exchange remain unchanged.
Re: One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
Between you and the unbundled box should be the same - are you connecting at the same speed just getting different speed test results? I'm guessing you didn't try the official open reach speed test before the switch? They could have actually swapped a couple of wires at the cabinet and removed a bad connection which could have improved your connection speed?
Re: One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
So many possible reasons. Could even be that the BT setup was capable of those speeds because something had changed, and with the new modem the line is now re-learning its characteristics. It could also be that a month from now after a few line drops, the new modem is back down to the old BT speed because that is best for stability.
Re: One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
I now have the issue where my broadband remains steady at 30mb wired at the router, but halve that over the same belkin wifi I have been using for years? It outputs the same 30m and when wired to it though?
Vodafone router used as modem only, with belkin router providing the WiFi. Belkin is at the heart of my 'smart cupboard', with a cat6 at 20m to reach to the bt socket where the modem sits.
Any thoughts on why my belkin is halve the wired speed, and an easy several mb down on what my old bt + belkin wifi router could output?
Re: One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
Is the router wifi actually disabled? If you are just ignoring it, then it could be causing interference still.
Re: One supplier to next, 8mb/s difference?
Just to add my tuppence worth, my speeds dropped considerably when I moved from BT to Vodafone. With BT I was getting around 65-70Mb/s now on Vodafone I cannot achieve more than 55Mb/s. I have the exact same setup with both providers, i.e. BT Echo Life modem going to my Asus router. To further compound the problem at peak times I suffer with contention and the my download speeds can drop to as low 5Mb/s. If I wasn't locked into a contract with Vodafone and on a heavy discount I would be looking to leave.

The contention is likely to be at voda's end. I'm not 100% sure but when you change provider your dlm may get reset so this may explain yours and also the OPs difference in speed
