How to set up a personal off-site backup?
I'm wanting to setup a NASbox at a friend's house to use as an offsite backup, and schedule a weekly backup from my home PC.
Once I've got the initial setup done (~600GB) I don't expect to be syncing more than a few hundred MB a week.
Can anyone recommend me a good NAS & software combination for this, please?

Have you considered Dropbox?

Synology offers a solution that would work (as I'm sure most half decent NAS manufacturers do!)
I don't use it myself as I'm backing up straight to onsite Synology then a combination of S3 & Glacier depending on the content.
Do you own any of the hardware yet or are you just looking? As I personally wouldn't be comfortable about the device being located elsewhere unless we're talking a proper COLO arrangement.

I'd go with something like FreeNAS, using it's own VPN and secured to the wazoo.

I have, but I'd much rather use my own hardware than trust a cloud provider when I don't know how where my data would be stored or how securely.
Yes I know this is probably being more paranoid than I need to be.
I would also sooner spend money up front for a couple of TB of NASbox than be paying monthly fees forever.

I don't own any hardware for off-site yet. I don't know what the best hardware for the job is.
At home I have a WD MyCloud EX2 for backups.
I don't feel the need for anything fancier than a dual-bay NAS with mirrored drives kept in a spare room belonging to a friend or family member

Can I run freeNAS on a NASbox, or would I need to something more like an HP Microserver? I am limited in budget, and in space to put something at the other end.

FreeNAS will need a PC, although that is becoming a bit of a grey area.....
In many cases, a second hand Microserver is cheaper than a NAS box anyway
