Question Router Help (Zak edit..he needs it)

We've just got a new broadband connection, as our old one had to go. Our temporary plan is to have 2 computers upstairs and one downstairs. We don't yet have a cat5 cable going between the two as yet. Therefore, there will be a router upstairs AND one downstairs, but only one will be connected at once.

We have a safecom SAMR-4114 which worked with our old connection, but doesn't work with the new one, and a BT voyager 205 ADSL router that came with our new connection. So far, the new router works fine with our new connection

I thought that to make the safecom router work with the new connection, we'd just have to change th username and password of our ISP. This hasn't worked though.

Our new connection is with BT Yahoo 512 and the 15 GB limit.

If someone else has managed to use BT Yahoo with a router than wasn't supplied by BT, I'd be interested to hear how they got it to work and if any other settings were needed.

    Thanks

I'm fairly new to this, BUT have you gone into the Router settings (notmally an IP address that you type into your internet browser) and go into the Connexction section and swap the detals to the new adsl account..ie user name and password?

    If you dontknow therouters IP,

go to-> Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Promt..

    This once in there type

    ipconfig/all

the PC's IP address will be in there but so will the routers.

Write it down, and then open up a borwser and type it in....

you'll need a user name and password for the router.

theninto the settings for the ADSL connection and swap t the new ones provided by BT

I've already changed the username/password. Is there anything else that might need to be changed, or even something that's BT Yahoo specific?

Have you purchased both routers yet? You would save a lot of hastle if you just got a wifi router instead. Then all you need is the router and 2 other network cards.

have you tried the one you know WORKS on the other plug socket...cos some plug sockets are wired wrong

ie MAKE SURE its the hardware and not the BT cabling.

Well, they've both worked previously (and the BT one still does). The BT router works OK on the line I'm trying it on. It's just the safecom one that doesn't. Is there an option to change within windows, a setting within the router, or something else?

NOTE - I unistalled the BT software that came with the BT router - it's LOADS of junk like a new browser, but the BT router works fine without it. Therefore, shouldn't the safcom work too?

    just thought

    DNS

I bet you ARE online but have no surfing...BECAUSE your router has the DNS set up for your old ISP.

Domain Name Server? or summit like that....DNS....it converts names to IP addresses. Each ISP has their own one.

I bet you can get email ..doesnt use DNS

    prolly had it hardset.

aj, the 15gb limit does not come into effect till april, like ti said in the press release.

o and fyi i have a router on bt not bty and it works fine, there is nothing to stop you using a none bt router, YOU will have over looked some thing.

Question did you set the new username and password and click save then reboot the router ?

having no understanding how the safecom router is set does not help. you got a link to the maker of the router.

Does the router that supposedly doesn't work, work on the machine that is connected to the router that does work!?

The router DOES work, but I just can't get the internet. I haven't tried emails only yet though, so it still might be the DNS thing. I'll try that next .

    Thanks for the help guys.

EDIT - Luke, just got your PM. Thanks for the advice - I'll change the settings over now and see if they work .

Luke - I did what you said, but it still hasn't worked. I had to change:

    Authentication = CHAP, and Modulation = G.DMT

I'm going to do a search myself to see if I can come up with any other information. I kind of assumed it was only the usernames/passwords that needed to be changed. I'm not good at this networking stuff .

EDIT - The reason that I think it's not working is because everytime I change the authentication to "CHAP", to goes back to "AUTO". I've found out that this happens because my WAN subnet address is invalid, so I'm off to search for the correct one.

Default settings are usually the right settings, its only when you have a really weird ISP when VPI/VCI etc need to be at different values to default.

Can't help any further I'm afraid

OK, I've decided to look for help on the safecom forums.

Also, why does it say "(Zak edit..he needs it)" in the title????

EDIT - OK, I've posted in that other forum now, so I might get an answer soon .
