As from sometime this week (probably tomorrow), we start being capped at 15GB/month. How is this measured? Is it everything you download, everything you upload, or a total of both?
We'll be on BT yahoo broadband @ 512 if that helps :).
Thanks

Usually its the total of uploads and downloads.
Butuz
Its literally everything you do online wether its sending mail, streaming media, online gaming or whatever else. As you use it your usage is monitored and once you reach the limit allocated you're connection will stop working till the next month.
Not looking forward to my cap, its getting done somepoint first quarter this year, £18 per month I will only be getting 2 Gb on a 1Mb connection from Wanadoo. Not much at all really.
Must admit, always disliked AOL but may just look into them, with a 256k connection and the same price you get unlimited use. Yeah it may be slower but its better than a 2 Gb cap
Yeah, I hate AOL too, but it sucks how they offer 512kb, 1mb and 2mb broadband at the same price as BT, minus the caps. BT have always been stingy.
Just before we decided how big (or small!) our cap should be, I downloaded a bandwidth monitor thing. Back then, I easily thought that me and the other 4 people that live here could survive on 15GB. Now I'm not so sure. I've recently started listening to online radio, so this coupled with online game play will really boost my usage.

(over the past 15 days, and just me!!!!)
Admittedly, I'm the only person in the house that greatly uses the net. However, my brother has just got a new PC, so if he takes to online gaming like I did, then who knows how much we could be using in the future.
So my question now if this: If we go over our limit, will our broadband just stop till next month like Ferral said, or would we just be charged (and if so, how much)?
Charged. IIRC £1 per gb, but don't quote me on that.
I have a network and would like to find out how much internet I use (as networked woudn't it be donw in packets? Where can I downlaod a prog. to show my net usage on my computer only (not other on network, my router tells me that)?
Thanks
Matt
Does anyone know when wanadoo are going to start monitoring you?
The cap does not come into effect till april, says so on the the website.Quote:

2nd post - eh? What does that mean? Does that mean instead of getting 512KB/sec, we only get 128? And if so why?
April!?!?!?! Akk, better start downloading things now:D
when you go over the limit they will throttle your connection down from 512 to 128, that way they know the internet is being used for normal browsing....

As for why....in their oppinon, if you use more than the quota then u should be on a higher spec plan seeing as you are using more resources than other people on the same priced plan as you.

regards the line, once you go over your limit the line is cut back to 128k, so you still have a inet connection till the next month then it goes back to the full speed, be that 512/1/2mb.
btw
for some strange reason network guys work in kiliobits and not kiliobytes, thus when you see network speed such as "512k" you need to devide by 8 to get the true speed.
512/8 =64k/s
1mb/8 =128k/s
2mb/8 = 256k/s
is the maximum speed you will ever get on these lines, factor in over heads for tcp/ip and your looking at 59/60 for the 512k line, 115/120 for the 1mb line and 240/245 for the 2mb line.
btw my adv for my 512k bt line is 59k/s
Drew
OK, so if we go over the cap, the speed drops, so does that mean we also need to pay extra?
