But I completely agree with you - 6a is overkill - in fact I’d say that for most people cat5 is sufficient and easier to install. However as Russ is starting from bare bricks in an empty house, he might as well do cat 6 as he can take the time to install it correctly without long pull through which can link the cable!
do you mean kink the cable?

Re: Bought a house, want to run cat6 cable..

I ran cat 5e from downstairs Virgin box to upstairs bedroom and upstairs study; it has been more than enough for maxing the Fibre connection, and the transfer of data from PC to PC / PC to NAS is only ever bottlenecked by the computing power available.

Cat6 makes sense for a bit of future proofing, although imagine the vast majority of use cases will not benefit from 6 over 5e...

One thing I would say is to run more cables than you think you will need. I ran one to the study and one to the bedroom. Now have a switch in both as bedroom connects the TiVo upstairs with the TiVo downstairs, a HTPC and Smart TV, and study runs PC, 2 x Laptops, Printer and a NAS. I made the mistake of only running one connection to each room and regret it, even if the switches are inexpensive. If your making a cable run anyway, its not normally troublesome to bundle 2 or more cables together when making the run.

I ended up making channels in the walls, then pinning the cables into the channel and plastering over the lot - messy but was happy with the finished result.

It’s taken 24 weeks to buy an empty property with no chain, but I get the keys Friday. Cable ordered. Wall chaser borrowed. I best take some pictures I suppose

Did you go for the Cat6 cable in the end?

Very true - I’ve seen cat5 installations when the sparky’ apprentice has done the termination with about 5 or 6 cams of untwisted wire loafing around the back box, or worse, all the cores just tepwisted up together in an attempt to make it look neat!

Brief update. Spent a few days chasing and helping electrician do first fix.

Pro tip. Buy a new house where this isn’t required and just use wireless. It’s similar to wired but without all the swearing.

Progress is slow I’m afraid. All plastered and painted. Majority of sockets on the wall and starting to get to the point where I can get the punch down tool out. Progress is paused due to scan not recognising my hexus account and me wanted to avoid paying postage on cab and patch. I’ll tale some teaser photos this weekend. Broadband is ordered for 28th. If there're no photos then none of this has happened!

Re new build houses, I hate them with a passion, bricks and mortar all the way. Stud partitioning is useless for sound proofing and and you can't hang anything of weight on the walls unless you've definitely hit a joist. Working with brick takes a lot longer but it's worth it in the end.

Re: Bought a house, want to run cat6 cable..

Sorry fellas. Absolutely mad weekend. I got the ports and the patch panel wires in.. but can hasn’t arrived yet so it’s just dangling at the minute. I’ll get some sneak peaks and then do a thread from start to finish when done. Next in there on Wednesday if you can hang on 48 hours!

Re: Bought a house, want to run cat6 cable..

Slightly belated. Here is where I am up to so far.
Have got all the sockets on and 10 wires back to the patch. Couple more still up in the loft. Didn’t know how to make the gaping hole in the ceiling look good, so I’m using a letterbox draft excluder
The brush flex on the sockets is where I’be run conduit to run anything else I want to down.. hdmi/coax etc

My cab has now arrived from scan. So will get shelf up next week and wardrobe doors on and post some more pics.
    And yes. Everything is cat6.

Will also do a full house renovation post when I’m done... in about a fortnight. Then I can start the extension...

Could have given you a Full 19" rack mount cabinet for free a couple of months ago & if you were local............. Er in doors was moving company offices and had 2 they were trying to get rid off to anyone who could collect. In the end they had to pay an IT recycling company to come & collect
