Wireless Mesh

Hey Guys,

With the recent Black Friday deals I've purchased a few Google Home Mini's and because of a deal with British gas have got a home hive hub and some bulbs.

This has led me to start looking into doing home automation which has made me realise just how poor my home wifi is (virgin home hub 3)

After a bit of research I have come to the conclusion that setting up a wireless mesh is likely to be the best way to go (we live in an old victorian terrace so a single wifi access point is going to struggle)

I've been looking at a few options like the google wifi home and the Netgear Orbi but was wondering if anyone has any experience of setting one up or can suggest some to look at.

Price wise I don't mind spending a few hundred if the solution is going to be worth it. I'm not saying money is no object but I will pay a bit extra if there is value in doing so

I know you say it5s an old house, but have the electrics been re-done in the last 10-15 years?

A good place to look for reviews and background knowledge is www.smallnetbuilder.com it focuses on Small Or Home Office gear and entry level stuff and explains its testing methodology pretty clearly. Its also pretty straight talking about marketing guff and features you won't/can't use. Looking at you MU-MIMO.

If wiring is pretty modern then I was going to suggest powerline with a wireless AP built in. I have one of those set up (devolo) and the throughput (although nowhere near the stated 1200Mbps) is totally suitable for most home usage. They dont have my model of powerline on that website, but the TP link ones seem to do pretty well and they're priced attractively.

Wired ethernet access points is always the best way to go of course.

I've just gone down the wireless mesh route. I looked at a few different options and ended up with the 3 disc BT Whole of home setup. It's pretty much plug and go. Previously I used my Draytek router and 2 extra draytek access points and it was a bit ropey.

3 discs give me coverage over a 3 floor semi detatched house made of engineering (ie dense) brick, and my man cave at the bottom of the garden. They have an ethernet port too, so you can backhaul over ethernet if that's an option for you (it's what I do).

You can't go wrong with NETGEAR Orbi, it's good for mesh networking.

Any comparisons between these and google wifi (mesh)?

Am hopefully moving some to a larger house and will cable up the rooms for ethernet, but will also need WiFi which reaches out to the garden / garage.

Was considering defaulting to google mesh, but not sure how this compares with the competition...

Forgot to post back about this.

I ended up buying the Zyxel Multy X Set up. It's been brilliant and I'm getting full connection all over the house.

There was an initial issue that they didn't support port forwarding but this was fixed within a week of me buying them.
