Cant see NAS on Network - Windows 10 Win 10

    Lo people

Fresh install of Win10 today at 7pm.....most was easy.. its nice to start over....

BUT NETWORKING,.,...... Christ on a bike!!!!

    its now midnight.

Only just worked out how to see my NAS box.. my old Win10 install sees it easily.. my wife and kid's PC see it..

but the new Win10 install cant see the FritzNas (or the other PC's on the network)

    Here's how to fix it-

Find "Windows Features" in Win10 (click the Windows icon, bottom lef and type Windows Features..click the "Turn Windows Features On and Off")

In there, scroll down and find "SMB 1.0 CIFS file Sharing"

tick it... you will need to reboot.

    Fixed.

    I hate Windows 10 networking

it sucks in a biiiiig way

Your NAS is SMB1.0 only? I'd be looking to replace the NAS in that case...

SMB1.0 is disabled by default in Win10 since the April 2018 update because it's a horrific protocol, somewhat Swiss Cheese. If your old Win10 still sees it then I'd suggest it's worth checking that your security patches are out of date.

Agree with this. It might be worth checking the settings if it does I'd be either looking for a new model or trying to force it onto a different subnet to most of my devices to keep them/it safe.

SMB1 dates from 1990, 2.0 has been around since 2006 so it's been coming for a while.

So is mine. Looks like they're aware it's an old version and are looking at adding smb3 in a future os update. Their current workaround is either reactivate smb1 as you have or use either http or FTP to access the Nas. Bit poor but at least they'll get it sorted eventually.

    It is SMB1 0nly

    https://en.avm.de/service/fritzbox/f...-the-FRITZ-Box

That would be a no-no for me as a NAS - but I run a NAS box on a Linux distribution which supports all versions of SMB - although they are going to implent SMB 2 and 3 "sometime".

You build a box using either FreeNas, or other Linux distro, or buy a synology or WD NAS box! If your prinuter isn't a network ready device, then the Linux box is the one to go for and set up the printer as a network shared device.

(ie - do the job properly from the ground up! You wouldn't cut down a tree with a hand axe, - well you could, but it wouldn't be as efficient as a chainsaw - right tool for the job)

That said, you may not want all the facilities of a full blown NAS, but if you want to use the Fritz box, at the moment you have no choice but to use SMBv1. You can attach the printer to one of the windows machines if it isn't a network printer, but then that computer needs to be on whenever you want to access the printer.

How is the printer connected at the moment? If it is to the Fritzbox, again you have no other option but to use SMBv1 until it is upgraded.

Re: Cant see NAS on Network - Windows 10 Win 10

I CAN (and did ) access the FritzNAS via HTTP so it's a viable option but not ideal

I'm not building another bloody box though., I already have the WHS for backup and stuff. The reason I used the FRITZ NAS was simply to alow file sharing between the 3 PC's in my house. If I download a game for one, I copy it acrossto the others. ie Unreal Gold recently.

So please can someone explain what DANGER I'm in using the SMBv1
What's exposed and how? If the NAS has nothing sensitive on it, are the PC's connected using it vulnerable and to what?

    This explains it https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...op-using-smb1/

Ultimately it comes down to risk assessment. How valuable is the data on the machines (either to you or a third party)?

How likely is it that a third party could get access to the network machines? (Are you using wireless? - hard wired is more secure, wireless gives an attack vector)

How likely is it that you will be subject to a directed attack, rather than 'just' an opportunist attack?

If you don't have any open incoming ports on the router, you are reasonably safe from an opportunistic attack from the internet.

If you aren't using wireless networking, you are reasonably safe from a 'man in the middle' attack via a wireless.

    Nail on the head there.

The problem is your NAS. Whoever at fritz NAS software development or whatever that made the decision to use only SMB1 is a corner cutter or a grade A moron.

The problem with consumer gear is that the companies that make it do not care whatsoever about any kind of security. SMB1 has needed to die for over 10 years. Rarely, the fault in this case lies not with Microsoft but Fritz up your security or whatever the cowboy outfit are called.

Next rant. IP cameras. Or anything IoT (or internet of rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish as it's known in the IT security industry)
