Server 2016, poor network transfer one way.

I don't post often as I know how to google 1st but this one has me really stumped.

In my loft I have an old supermicro x9sci-ln4 rack server connected to an old DES-1210-28P, the server connects to it via 2 of the 4 1gb ports, this in turn is connected to my Asus AC68u router via a 3rd gb port.

Anything uploaded to the server heads at full speed but anything I transfer from the server comes back at a tenth of the speed to the extent streaming HD films from it makes them unwatchable now. This happens when any device sends or receives files. I have checked the switches and turned off any QOS on them and reset the server network along with reinstalling the network drivers for the server.

I have also turned off just about everything in the advanced network properties that googles suggested but still exactly the same!

It has two interfaces connected to the switch? My first act would be to change that to a simple single interface going to the switch. If you are running the same IP address on both ports in some bonding arrangement then the switch will probably only be using one of the interfaces for upload anyway, giving you a difference between upload and download, which is why my spider senses are tingling in that direction.

If interface bonding/aggregate is set up to allow 2Gb/s to the switch, but the client can only take 1Gb/s, then you could be flooding the switch to the point it drops packets.

No bonding and 2 IP's, one is used for CCTV. I forgot to say I have tried it with the CCTV port disabled and no change.

According to https://www.supermicro.com/support/r...es/OS/C204.cfm that server isn't supported with Server 2016 - don't suppose you're able to try it with a supported OS (Possibly a linux livecd of on of the supported OS) and see if you get the same issues?

Aside from that... the NIC chipset *does* look to be supported on Server 2016 - are you using this driver?

(I'd still try a different OS - even Intel don't provide a system chipset driver for 2016)

Next question: the server and your uplink to your AC68u are *definitely* all using GbE ports and not the other 100Mb ports? Have you double checked that the ports haven't negotiated down to 100Mb (duff cable etc)?

If that doesn't help (and you see the same issues in an officially supported OS) then I'd be looking to take a Wireshark dump and see if you're seeing discard or something.

Yeah everything's running on the gb ports at gb full duplex speeds, the 100mb is the remote access for IMPI. It is running with the driver provided by server 2016, I will see if that one works.

*edit, that driver isn't supported.

What bitrate are your HD streams? I would have thought 100Mb would be enough for most streams so it shouldn't be an issue with port speed negotiation, it has to be something like packet loss or server tuning.

Get a fast client PC, run WireShark on it and do a packet capture whilst downloading a file.

Perhaps try swapping the switch out for another, any cheap consumer 8 port would work for a quick test.

Try turning off the checksum offloading in the NIC driver.

Also disable remote differential compression if you have installed it.

Already tried, basically turned everything off and on in turn/groups all at one. Also been direct to the server cutting out the POE switch and it made no difference.

Yeah I have a 2nd cable I tried but still the same, my tester also came back ok with the same dice per pair as well. Bloody thing.

Just loaded its BIOS into UBU and it does say it can update the NICs OROM but none of my versions of MMTool seem to be able to make the change....might be an avenue to explore.
