Considering 2 years ago I paid £80 for a 5 port 10/100 switch, I personally think this is a very good price for a gigabit switch, and with more boards having integrated gigabit, now is the time to take advantage of it.

Why bother with a gigabit switch? What would you need gigabit ethernet for? Your average hard disk cant produce enough data to soak up a gigabit link...
you normally get around 24Mb/s per port on a gigabit switch. compared to 8-9Mb/s on 100mb/s ethernet. it only goes much faster if you have multiple network operations happening at once. you soon hit the limits of 32bit 33mhz pci buses as well. you really need a 64bit 66mhz network card to get the benfits
Must confess to looking at one of these.
My plan was to have a gigabit backbone for my servers, uplinked into one of the gigabit ports on my 3com switch.
Just coudn't justify it though.
Sometimes you like to buy kit that will last you 10 years. If I were buying a new switch I'ed consider buying a gigabit one.
Hehe that was an error price. - its £136 inc vat now. Gigabit aint that cheap yet, unfortunatly, tho the way things are going, another couple of years we'll all have gigabit.

nah, cant be doing with gb just yet, till some of the high end gear filters down, i just bought a cisco 2950 switch, and i aint about to replace it yet
It is always worth "buying" the mis priced ebuyer things as you tend to get free postage on your next buy as compensation
i just wouldent order from ebuyer, had problems with nearly every order from them
now thats what i call a bargain me thinks a may well be getting one!!:)

Nothing wrong with having too much network gear. I have a managed 3com rackmount switch - I really don't need it but I like it :D
