    Help with a server

    Hi All

    Im wanting to build a server for my home which will be able to share files and my printer, i would also like it to host the odd game.

    im thinking of using a spare machine i have sitting in my loft
    its a old emachines pc that is no longer any use, untill now

    it has:
    1.8 celeron
    256 ddr
    onboard graphics
    and the rest i cant remember

    what OS would you guys recomend using?

    any help is welcome as ive never done this before

    A Linux distribution (I recommend RedHat). For file and printer sharing, you should use Samba

    windows 2000 would probably be better as it may not have problems with the onboard graphics card, and it will be able to host games better.

    Unless a game is just a "server binary" such as Jedi Knight II you need to run the game to host it, which is out under linux

    He means that some games do not require the game to host a server, but instead simply have a 'dedicated server' which will usually run on Linux.
