Advice on Wifi network for Hyperoptic 1Gb

    Hi guys,

I've recently moved to a new flat and currently trialing Hyperoptic's 1Gb connection - I want to make the most of the connection speed as the flat is currently rented, I don't want to go ahead with cabling up the place with ethernet cables (i know this is the best solution).

I've been getting by with the onboard wifi from my Asus Crosshair VII but I'm maxing out @~300-350Mbps to an ASUS AC87U router. Having tried the powerline adapter option (Devolo Magic 2 LAN) i wasn't getting particularly good results.

My next move to try and get close to the 1Gb speed is to either get a better wifi receiver, Asus PCE-AC88 and a faster AC router (cheaper/slower option) or getting 2x AX routers, either Asus RT-AX88u or ROG AX11000 (expensive option) and creating a wireless bridge connection - since there are no AX client cards on the market.

Please let me know what you think or if I'm going about this completely wrong!?

    Thanks in advance

Going to the AC88 will bump speeds a bit, but even in best conditions it's probably still less than half the capability of Gb in the real world, and I don't know how good your onboard wifi is.

Realistically you don't want to be faffing with bridges either, if Gb is important.

Just use cables - you don't have to drill any holes and adding a bit of length just so you can route through doorways etc. isn't going to have much impact on performance.

Though, ultimately, the benefit of such internet speeds isn't point to point, but in allowing simultaneous devices at your end. That's also what AC wireless etc. is good for.

As Kalniel says, for max performance, go cable. If it’s a small flat, over the distances you are looking at cat 5e will be fine and can be run discreetly along skirting boards or round the edge of rooms.

you can get these for doorways, going across corridors, and the like. Using one in my hall - works a treat.
