Wifi and Lan nics on 1 machine to 2 different networks

    Hi fellow Hexus'ers,

I have a problem I've come across and can't suss the solution

Virgin Media have let me down with my install on-hold waiting for permit and existing TalkTalk now been disconnected so stuck in limbo.

My neighbour has very kindly let me borrow their wifi but I still have local media files I need accessable on ethernet to Nvidia Shield, so I'm trying to setup as follows............

Virgin Media Wifi Hub (DHCP): 192.168.0.1 (not going to be able to change anything on here)

    TalkTalk Router: 192.168.1.1

I'd like Windows 10 Pro PC to connect wirelessly to Virgin Media hub for internet, and through ethernet to TalkTalk router so local shares of media files are available to Shield.

    Windows 10 PC:

    Eth (static)
    ip: 192.168.1.2
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.1

    Wifi (DHCP)
    ip: pulling 192.168.0.3x
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.0.1
    DNS: 192.168.0.1

If I setup like that then trying to access the internet results in dns errors and safety warnings.

If I disable Eth then internet works on PC but no access to files for Shield, and vice versa if I disbale the other one instead.

I don't want the heavy traffic of local media files to go through neighbours rotuer and hog their network. It's going to get congested with all the other devices on wifi so don't want to take the piss, not to mention poor stability of pushing 4k films over wifi.

Can anybody please give some pointers to get this going? I feel like it should be possible and shouldnt really be difficult but I can't figure it out

    Thanx

Both networks are using the same subnet, 192.168.1.x

    Change your ethernet to 192.168.2.x

Only the network connection that gives you Internet must have the 'default gateway' set. To do this simply leave the relevant box blank for the Ethernet connection that connects you to your Talk Talk router/in-house network.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Ooops that was actually a typo on my part. The Wifi was on 0.x - I'll notch it up to being so late

Thank you sooooo much SUMMONER. That's done the trick. Knew it was something simple

I have internet on the Win 10 PC and the Shield can access media files from it as well. Unfortunately the Shield doesn't appear to allow ethernet and wireless active at the same time so I can't update the library as it needs to access the PC to see new files, and then the internet to scrape the information for TV episodes. I'll figure it out as there must be some way to manually add it if need be until Virgin get their act together.

    Thanks again good man

You could experiment with a Windows feature called 'Internet Connection Sharing'. It basically allows you to share the WiFi Internet connection of the Windows 10 PC with all the other devices that are connected to the Talk Talk router.

However unless you actually enjoy tinkering I would suggest waiting for Virgin to do their thing.

NOTICE: If you want to give it a go you must first turn off the DHCP server on the Talk Talk router, as it will be your Windows 10 PC that will be providing this service for your entire in-house network from here on. Also your PC must remain switched on for this to work

If you have an old router or access point kicking around you might be able to set that up as a client access point to your neighbour's wifi giving you an ethernet connection to the outside, and then plug it into a WAN port on your main router if it has one.

That's two if's, so you probably can't, but seemed worth mentioning as I'm sure I could MacGyver that together so you might have the same sort of kit lying around
