Heavy duty ethernet cable?
I was just wondering if there is a heavy duty ethernet cable.
I have cables to run though an artciulating conduit from a
computer to the boards in a milling machine, I will have to
run them in something but something a bit heavier to start
with would be good.
Re: Heavy duty ethernet cable?
How heavy duty do you want? You could use cat 6 or an external grade cable that has a more robust (but less flexible) outer sheath, or if you want really heavy duty you could get SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable.
Re: Heavy duty ethernet cable?
The original wiring was all rubber sheathed with all pairs individualy shielded.
I have some boxes of the orignal wiring but most of it went in the bin.
Outdood type is probably fine. I was just looking at the belden site, lot's of wire there.
I guess I need to look at somewhere that will sell by the metre.
Re: Heavy duty ethernet cable?
Not sure where you can get it by the metre (Maybe eBay, but no quality guarantee.
I’ve used this in the past https://www.cablemonkey.co.uk/cat5e-...er-sheath.html

Solid core cables will fatigue and fracture with repeated bending. Stranded core is best in this case.

Depends how much bending is involved - I agree that solid is a poorer choice for patch cables, but in this use case, if it's a fit and forget cable to a bit of kit that is rarely moved, solid would be fine - and external grade cable is only available as a solid core variant (as far as I can tell). The stiffer outer core tends to mitigate against extreme bending anyway.
Re: Heavy duty ethernet cable?
He seemed to emphasise heavy duty cabling for an articulating conduit, so I imagine that's going to be an issue. But you're right, mechanical durability and external grade is a non-starter. He'll have to go with one or the other, depending on the priority.
Re: Heavy duty ethernet cable?
Hmm, I just came across this bad-boy, it's stranded, shielded, and armoured:

Probably quite pricey and hard to get a hold of, and corrosion might still be more of an issue, but it could get the job done once-and-for-all™.

Similar to this https://www.cablemonkey.co.uk/cat5e-...per-metre.html
Really heavy duty - designed to Dug-in-Ground use or in permanent conduit - great for taking it to an outbuilding where a catenary is ruled out, but for domestic use, I would probably use external grade run in some hosepipe to give a bit of additional protection and buried about 3 feet down (if it was in a garden - with markers showing start and end points)
