    Wi-Fi printer whitelist

I just installed an HP Wi-Fi printer, and connecting the PC, phone and tablet couldn't be simpler. So simple in fact that anyone connected via the same Wi-Fi network with the HP driver / app (used accross a wide range of HP printers) can connect to and send jobs to the printer.

The problem is, while the network isn't open to the public, a lot of people can and do have access to it but a selected number of devices should have access to the printer.

Is there any simple solution to this? Access on whitelist basis would be ideal.

    Re: Wi-Fi printer whitelist

    Depends on which HP printer.

HP business class printers typically provide a great deal of access control, from MAC filtering to individual pin numbers and most points in between. Login to the embedded admin web portal and explore.

The cheap domestic HP printers, not so much.

The easiest way to do this will likely be to have a separate 'guest WiFi network' that does have Internet access but is blocked from communicating with your computers, printers, Apple TV, Chromecast, SmartTV etc. Most modern routers do have an option to enable that function with a few mouse clicks.

yes, but this would then limit these devices from connecting to other devices within the home network, and would probably severely limit the bandwidth available to anyone on the guest network, not to mention screwing up any ip address scheme that the OP might have.

it works in a simplistic network, and as you say its the easiest way to do it, but it would cause problems in other ways

Violence and Lubrication is the solution to fixing everything, if it still doesn't work, you need more lubrication.

The answer appears to lie here

    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c04808536

however that will turn off instant ink and other web services, such as printing from messenger etc
