I take it that mgh0's worked out that his router is...not in the pink of health...

Router is fine, always was fine, I am concerned about the network card.
The lovely chaps at Netgear seem to have fixed the problem, and if it breaks again i have an rma number. It takes ages as they work through the list of possible problems but they are thorough and we got there in the end.
