New BT Ethernet socket - what modems support it

I have just had Mr. BT man round and got him to install a new BT MK4 Ethernet Socket in the wall for Fibre. It includes a traditional phone socket and an Ethernet Socket, I stupidly thought my ASUS router had a modem inbuilt, but looking at the Manual even though I can input the DSL login details it still requires a separate modem

My new issue now is finding a modem that can utilise this new Ethernet type connection as all the ones I have found thus far are traditional RJ11 DSL connectors.

Does anyone know of a cheap VDSL modem that will support an Ethernet based connetion for fibre?

    Cheers

Ok it looks like I simply need one of these types of cables, didn't realise they existed

Re: New BT Ethernet socket - what modems support it

Depends what the wan socket is on the modem/router. The only thing that has changed with the new socket is the presentation of the signal, which is now RJ45 rather than RJ11. It has all the necessary filtering built in to the clip on faceplate.

I have only come across this once, but I did find it essential to ensure that the faceplate is clipped on firmly to ensure proper connection.

Just make your own if you have the appropriate crimping tool. That's what I did.

Also check & see is the wall socket will take either RJ11 or RJ45, some do and others will if you force it the RJ11 slightly but you need to be careful not to damage the socket.

PS. It's not your 3G connection that's slow, it's Hexus me thinks,, it's crawling for me atm.

Any VDSL modem made for the UK market should do the job. While the BT wall socket is technically RJ45 it will accept a RJ11 cable/plug (only the 2 centre most pins are actually used).

It is completely loose, when I went to unplug the cable I had in there, it fell off. Once I get my modem I'll test how much of an issue the loose faceplate is. A bit of tape maybe required, rather than having him out again.

As it happens I went with the Vigor 130. It in theory can be controlled from my ASUS. Acts like a Virgin router in modem only mode.

Re: New BT Ethernet socket - what modems support it

All connected woohoo - didnt even have to configure the Vigor 130 so guessing it has taken what I put into the ASUS. Happy days.
Now to see how the new connection works over time.
Was getting 80 while the BT guy was here, now dropped to 60. Maybe with the modem in, the line will start to do its bouncing period.

BT technician was probably measuring line speed to the BT gateway - if you are using a tool like Speedtest you are measuring to some arbitrary server on the wider internet.

Good point, when I actually get my PC up and running I'll be able to better testing.

You need a modem that supports "VDSL"
