ADSL, NTL/BY Broadban, etc Which one and how?

Ok

SO I've 3 PC's and I'm moving to a new house.

At present I'm running off a BlueYonder cable modem into a nic in my main PC then out to a hub and on to the other.

I fancy putting a connection straight to a router thingy then feeding eh PC's off that.

But how and the best way? I'll probably have a BT line.

I've heard good things about Pipex, do I just need something like : Linksys Broadband Etherfast Cable/DSL Firewall Router With 4-port Switch ?

You can use a router with your cable connection - you dont need ADSL.

Personally I'd stay with BY. I've used both BY cable and ADSL and there is no comparison - BY Cable is far superior in terms of ping times and uptime...

I've just checked the area and it's covered by NTL.

I've heard NTL put a cap on how much you download?

They don't enforce the cap though. It was designed to scare people to downloading less as it was costing them too much money.

Aye, Ive got NTL 1mb and it works fine regardless of how much i download. You need a router tho with cable, but it is very easy to set up

I would however mention that in my experience NTL customer service and billing section suck! Over the past 2 months they've managed to cut off my cable account, loose my cable account and decide that my cable modem was no longer registered at my current house but that it was now registered to the house I havent lived in for 8months.

But the broadband they offer is pretty good. And I think you'll find people who've had problems with every supplier, so it's probably down to personal preference. You just have to remember you can get other stuff along with the NTL BB such as TV & telephone that makes it a better all around deal.

I must admit i have 'abused' my download limit on a few occasions and NTL have never said a peep to me about it. They may well be targeting specific individuals but then agen i cud just be lucky.

Pipex is okay, had a few hiccups, but mostly it's okay now.

Look at Zen, Nildram and Eclipse though for the best (BT's offering is expensive and slow by comparison).

Linksys are ace. Just got a 4 port router for two pcs and my by cable connection and its running great so far (only a couple of days in tho tbh )
