Wall 'plug' for external cable route

Hi Folks,

I am going to put 2 cable runs from my living room to outside my property (a log cabin). One will be the primary and the other a spare. I have external grade Cat5e and will likely use some form of trunking to do this (as it is going underground because I already have to dig a trench for the electrics). However, is there anything I can get for the wall to make it neat and ensure no issues with damp ingress or similar?

I recently had FTTP installed and the BT engineer used a white 'plug' (only word I can think of) which seems to go into the wall and the cable goes through it. It looks very neat and possibly avoids damp etc? However, I have no idea what it is.

So I’m just looking some advice on do's and don'ts on the following:

• What should I use in the interior and exterior of my house? (Exterior is roughcast).
• What kind of trunking should I use and would an armoured electric cable mess with it (It wouldn’t be in the same trunking).

Anything I may have missed and you spot, please advise.

Yeah, there is but I've no idea where you can buy it.

Years ago, when a Virgin ( think it was Virgin, could've been Sky) engineer ran some external cable underground, he used a sort of flexible plastic pipe (green, IIRC) and some flanges. A friend and I were both planning a little project and chatted to him about it. When he packed up and left, he somehow forgot about a coil (about 50m) of that green tube, and a small selection of flanges. He never came back for it.

I think the idea is to keep moisture, the elements, and aggressive and curious critters out of the cabling. It seems to work.

As an aside, there was a wildlife program on TV the other day talking about fire ants. Apparently, when one gets attacked or detects a predator, they release a pheromone that summons the entire colony in attack mode. Normally, they then just mob any predator.

However, something about electrical current also attracts them. Naturally, it fries them and in the process, they .... yup, you got it, they release that pheromone ans summon the colony. Which 'attacks' the threat, the electricity, and the lot get fried. Whole colonies have been known to sort-of mass suicide like that, and that seems to be the mechanism. The irony is that the reflex that makes them so formidable, and is their greatest strength, is also their nemesis when they find electrical circuitry. Oops.

It's crazy that these kind of things can't be bought by a consumer Or maybe it's because I don't know the correct name for it!

you drill the wall, feed the cable through, black plate goes on outside preventing water ingress, use a network punch down tool to attach the cable to the white faceplate/box and screw that to your inside wall, plug in ethernet cable.

Hi Folks, My electricians are going to do this when doing all the other work. Only worked out at an extra £30 so I was happy to pay it and not worry about it!

You dont see these much anymore, some translucent silcone is normally used. If you've made a mess of the external wall you can mix some brick dust in to make it more pleasing on the eye.
