    Router

    Need an ADSL router...
Got a WAG54G atm but this doesnt allow monitoring to the sort of level I want as I need something that will allow me to see what internal ip's/users goto which sites etc.
It also needs filtering by url/ip/keyword and filetype to stop users downloading certain things, but this needs to have the ability to be switched off for certain IP's...

Have been looking at the Draytek 2600+ but just wondered if there were any others out there that people recommend...

2600 is good for most of that.

however the active nat monitoring isn't quite ideal.

it will show you active NAT sessions on the router , but wont quite tell you to a site level ( and its a pain to work through )

you'd need a full on web proxy to be able to view it by site ( imagine a scenario where you have a web server that hosts legiatimate sites as well as dodgy ones - you might accidently roast the wrong user )

If budget allows then splash out on something like a watchguard firebox which will give you a real time graphical interface of whats going on ( which looks very cool )

for true site level control , you would need a proxy though.

if you dont mind a play with linux , I've used a clarkconnect box with danguardian running to do this before.

What kind of budget should I be looking at?
The Draytek is ~£160+vodak & tonic..
I've been given the OK to buy one but maybe I should be looking at a proxy of some description when we get the new 2k3 server and hide the costs elsewhere

Microsoft ISA is quite expensive + if you wanted to get some content control then it woudl hurt.

clark connect can be run on an old box with a couple of network cards in it.

you can still use the draytek ( it has some oterh very usefull features which are nice , like it supporting SNMP so can monitor bandwidth in use - it has some basic VLAN control so you can put lusers on 1 vlan via a content control box , while power users ( ie. you ) can have they own percentage of bandwidth and relativly unfiltered content.

Just a thought; will your ISP give you multiple IP's? Use IP for your gateway, another IP for the users Gateway.

clarkconnect is quite modular and easy to use - or you could put it together yourself from a distro and modules - check with the resident linux heads.
