Wireless internet (narrowboat)

Im planning to spend a month or two on my grandads narrowboat, and although im not planning to surf the net 24/7 (part of the point of doing it is get away for a bit) i would like to be able to take a laptop for keeping in touch via emails/msn etc. so ive been looking into wireless conections.

- My phone has GPRS (nokia6610i) and i could use the i believe, but it would be very slow, and i would get charged by the MB!

- Also i has spoken to someone who uses a 3Gcard with Orange (as seen on TV), but he sayes the coverage is rubbish at the moment and he normaly ends up using gprs.

Just wondring if anyone here had used a wirless internet coneciton?

I use GPRS on my Orange M1000 to sync with Exchange for emails - it does also run MSN for a bit of chat on a boring train , but I dont pay the phoe bills so its not a problem for me

the 3G card will drop back down to GPRS in non coverage areas automatically
Both equally expensive tbh.
Probably not worth getting 3G just for this. Use GPRS on any relatively new phone I reckon.

So, if i get a datacable for my 6610i, and Dl the approprate(sp) onto my laptop i can get a 43.2 kbps web conection anywhere i can get signal?

- I;ve had a look for data cables, and i was wondering whats the diffrence between the $50 nokia USB cable and the £5 serial cables at places like mobilefun.co.uk
- Also how does the software work, does it just look like a normal network conection, or it it more complicated than that?

I bought a cheap phone cable off ebay for £5 compared to £35 for cheapest one in town, and it was very hard to set up the connection. Aparently the Nokia ones have something they don't and work a lot better. But for all I used it for it was fine. Though if you want to avoid spending over an hour trying to get it connected you might be better to splash out on an expensive one

You can chat on phones now? Isn't technology wonderful!

I got a Vodafone GPRS PCMCIA card on Pay-As-You-Go a while back, connects at dial-up speed and works pretty well. Lets me browse Gmail and the like without messing around with cables.
