How to make Linksys Router Secure??!?

Have got a Linksys G Boardband Router plugged straight into my cable modem via an ethernet cable, everything works fine, but its not secure, do i have to install the software for the router onto my laptop?!?!?!

Don't want anyone pinching my bandwidth!?!!!

How easy is it to make it secure??!!?

What do i need to do?

    Thanks
    Martin

Try visiting http://192.168.1.1 in your browser.

Both user and pass defaults should be 'admin'

    Linksys Wireless Boardband G (WRT54GS)

Had a look at linksys website,
tells me to connect to the ip of router

would it let me change these settings without installing the software from linksys CDROM?

Did you not click the link I posted

Maybe try the suggestions people give rather than just ask the same question again and ignore the answer.

    • nichomach's system
      • Motherboard:
      • Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3
      • CPU:
      • AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 95W
      • Memory:
      • 16GB DR3
      • Storage:
      • 1x250GB Maxtor SATAII, 1x 400GB Hitachi SATAII
      • Graphics card(s):
      • Zotac GTX 1060 3GB
      • PSU:
      • Coolermaster 500W
      • Case:

      • Operating System:
      • Windows 10
      • Monitor(s):
      • Dell 20" TFT
      • Internet:
      • Virgin Media Cable
Then try it when you get home. By default, the WRT54G should ship with an SPI firewall enabled to block external attacks, but unless you've configured it, the wireless network will be wide open. If you connect to the router, then you'll be able to click on the link posted above as admin, password admin. You will be able to change all of the security settings (including changing the password) from the web interface that you'll see when you do.

We're happy to help!!!! But!!!! Having the details!!!!!!!!!! Makes it!!!!! easier!!!!

Changing the admin password should be the first thing you do.

Having a degree and being good with computers aint linked

There are people at work who have more qualifications than me but my knowledge easily surpasses theirs.

Wireless is a bit confusing first time you get your hands on it. Took me a few minutes to understand WEP/WPA.

For ulimate security you could keep the router in a safe. That will stop any one pinching it. Ow you said bandwith. Sory.
