    Plus.net users

AOL contract is nearly over .

I will most likely be changing to plus.net, so... 2 things,

    1) Is there a monthly bandwidth cap? (I plan to use the premier service)
    2) First person to help me with the above question, and is a plus user, gets me to use their referal link

No, they ask you use your conection responsably tho. And its a 30:1 ratio.

What do you mean by using it responsibly? and what's a 30:1 ratio?

    ^ about the conection info.

Basicaly they will send you a letter telling you to lay off if your using enough bandwith to get an effective 1:5 ratio or someting there very vaige about it. But if you break the rules theres nothing worce than a wrist slapping.

I'll try and find the e-mail for you that told me about it.

    - What is contention? When you connect to the Internet using ADSL broadband technology you are in effect sharing the connection infrastructure with other customers. The term 'contention' is simply a ratio used to measure the extent of this sharing. Learn about contention in our Beginner's Guide - http://www.plus.net/support/features...on_guide.shtml - What happens to my account? 1. There will be no change to the subscription for your service. 2. We will improve the contention level that you registered for, from 50:1 to 30:1. By managing broadband through contention, we can continue to provide you with an enjoyable Internet experience without introducing fair usage guidelines. Thank you for taking the time to read this information. If you would like further detail, please visit this support page - http://www.plus.net/support/adsl/fai...e_update.shtml With regards, Carol Axe Customer Services Manager

OK, what would be going over the edge? I use bit-torrent a lot, sometimes for weeks in a row, would that be a bad thing in their eyes? (Lots of bandwidth consumption).

    Thanks

    See above post!

    7. So how do you solve the problem you were trying to address with Fair Usage? In changing our approach we will only need to address a very small minority of unsustainable users rather than all of our customers. The average profile of these users assumes a contention of between 1:1 and 5:1 on a consistent basis, which adversely affects the experience for the majority. As we identify these users we will ensure that the negative impact on the capacity available to all customers will be minimised. We will also assist these users in finding an alternative broadband provider where appropriate.
    and

    10. Is there a monthly download limit? No, there is no fixed limit or cap because we want our customers to have the flexibility and freedom to use the internet as they need to. If your use is very heavy, we recommend you schedule regular large downloads and long periods of data transfer during off peak times when the network is significantly quieter. This ensures you minimise the impact on the remainder of the network and to other customers who share the contention. Find out what times are off peak
    and possably

    11. So will PlusNet’s fixed cost broadband products allow unlimited downloads? No. Downloading 24/7 365 is using the service on a 1:1 contention ratio and is unsustainable on consumer broadband. [TOP]

    12. Do I have to worry about how I use my broadband connection? No. 99% of our customers are using their broadband connection in a completely sustainable manner, and because of the new approach you won’t need to keep an eye on your usage levels every month.

If your still unsure you could alwase give them a ring, there 24/7 Phone surport is VERY good!

They seem a bit too strict for my use,
    Thanks for the help though

Hate to say it, but compared to AOL, it is strict. But it does make sense, AOL is practically worldwide..

I'll PM you if I change my mind, Thanks.

To get a 5:1 ratio you'd have to dowload solidly at full speed for all but 5 days in a month, good luck finding any consumer bb product that doesnt have a problem with that.

True.. Can't seem to find anything, apart from AOL.

I'll sleep on it, how much did you have to download to get that email/letter? (Manage to find it?)

    Thanks

From the forum early indications show:

You have to be maxing out your connection pretty much 24/7 to have a real effect on the network.

It takes a good couple of weeks of 24/7 consistant downloading to hit 100Gb... and even that is relatively fine.
I think 125 and around that are the limits other ISP's use, at least if you break it with plus they wont trottle or stop your conection.
